February 2010, an amazing month of
Family Volunteering with
United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties
Thank You! February proved to be another incredible and impactful month of service to our community and in support to our United Way.
February started with Speedweeks 2010. Thanks to 101 volunteers, including those as young as 11 years old, we completed another round of Target Parking and raised $37,672 for our local community! Surprisingly with Friday's washout--that is only $413 less than last year!!! For those of you who have never heard of Target parking, United Way manages the parking lot during the races. Target donates 100% of what collected in the lot to support our 40 partner agencies and 66 community programs. Save the dates, next round of parking is scheduled for July 2nd & 3rd. Remember, we can't do it without you. Check out our photos from Speedweeks 2010 online by clicking here!
February closed with Flagler & Volusia Recycles Day on Saturday, February 27th. Over 410 volunteers as young as 2 years old, collected, sorted and delivered 875lbs of aluminum cans and 7,376lbs of mixed materials to three local recycling sites. As one of our United Way staff members noted, "think of how much space we've saved in the landfills." Additionally GEL Recycling will be donating $810 to United Way thanks to these collections. This project is made possible thanks to a partnership between GEL Recycling, Flagler County Solid Waste Division, Volusia County and your United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. Thanks also to our United Way Project Leaders Myrna Fontanez, Sam Ruiz and Theresa Wolf for you on-site assistance through the rainy and cold day. We've posted photos from the Flagler Recycles day on our Facebook page.Click here, check out the photos and become one of our fans!
What do we have to look forward to in March--The Great PB&J Challenge for Children and Cards of Appreciation for our Local Heroes--our Police, Fire & Sheriffs Offices.
These projects have also been made possible thanks to a grant our United Way received from Disney and the HandsOn Network.
We have just received word that Disney is very close to that one million voucher mark. So, if you are still hoping to Give A Day. Get A Disney Day and have NOT yet signed up for a project log onto www.disneyparks.com as soon as possible to search for the remaining eligible projects for this program.
As always, the United Way Volunteer Center is here to help you register for any number of local volunteer opportunities, as a family or as an individual throughout the year. Contact us by phone at 386-253-0563 or log onto 1-800-volunteer.org to find your next service opportunity.

What is a Volunteer Project Leader? Volunteer Project Leaders work in conjunction our United Way Volunteer Center to regularly manage volunteer projects. Project Leaders receive specialized training and help to serve as the "eyes and ears" of the affiliates at each project, acting as a liaison between the affiliate, volunteers, and the organization where the volunteer project occurs.
As a Project Leader you will have the opportunity to work closely with an organization and its clientele to make a significant impact in our community.
This training, held at the United Way office in Daytona Beach, made possible by a grant received from HandsOn Network and Disney.

As the 2010 Census approaches, each of our households will receive a form. Since the census has such an impact on the community in which we live and work, we are asking for your participation.
Census data shapes the future of our community and defines our voice in Congress. Census information helps determine locations for schools, roads, hospitals, child care, senior citizen centers and more. Businesses use census data to locate supermarkets, shopping centers, new housing and other facilities. The Census determines how many seats each state will have in the US House of Representatives as well as the boundaries of legislative districts. There are so many positives to participating.
Census forms are COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL for 72 years and cannot be shared with anyone, including welfare and immigration agencies, any court of law, and even the President of the United States.
Please complete and mail back your form, and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to do the same. Our census numbers stick with us for 10 years so let's make sure that FLAGLER & VOLUSIA COUNT! | |
