2010--the year of Family Volunteering here at United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties

In conjunction with Disney and HandsOn Networks' Give A Day. Get A Disney Day program, the United Way Volunteer Center, is really working hard to develop projects and engage families in service this new year. And thanks to YOU we are off to a great start!

Last month, 384 volunteers from as far as New York contributed over 1880 hours constructing uplifting and creative cards to be distributed to the clients of Flagler County Senior Services and Halifax Health-Center for Pediatrics (Speediatrics). Messages included "Thinking of You," "Happy Birthday," "Get Well Soon," and many holiday messages as well. Thanks to their incredible efforts, we well surpassed our goal of a minimum of 3,000 cards to be constructed in January. Project Leader Dee Aceto will be delivering 2591 cards to Speediatrics and 1949 cards to Flagler Senior Services for a grand total of 4540 Caring Cards! Many families have asked to continue with this project year-round because they value the togetherness it brings. Thankfully, Mrs Aceto has agreed to serve as a Project Leader and will be continuing this project throughout the year for our United Way. So get ready--she'll be in touch soon with more details.

Saturday, January 30th was our annual Daytona 5K & Fun Walk to benefit United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. 100 volunteers served 334.43 hours to assist with all aspects of the race (athlete bag preparations, registration, aid stations, cheering section). This is an annual fundraiser for United Way, which raised another $3550 to be added to our allocations to 40 local agencies to improve access and services delivered to our community.  Thank you!!

February brings another round of Target Parking, which annually raises approximately $60,000 for our community and our Flagler & Volusia County Recycles Day on February 27th, thanks to partnerships with Gel Recycling, Flagler & Volusia Counties.

Keep checking www.disneyparks.com for your chance to register for the above and other service opportunities if you would like to participate with the Disney Give A Day. Get A Disney Day Program.

If Disney is not your thing, you can still always call the United Way Volunteer Center at 253-0563 or log onto 1-800-volunteer.org  to register for any number of local volunteer opportunites, as a family or as an individual.

Thank you for your commitment to serve in 2010!

Sincerely,
Laura & Deb

UNITED WAY RECRUITING

VOLUNTEER PROJECT LEADERS

What is a Volunteer Project Leader?
Volunteer Project Leaders work in conjunction our United Way Volunteer Center to regularly manage
volunteer projects. Project Leaders receive specialized training and help to serve as the "eyes and ears" of the affiliates at each project, acting as
a liaison between the affiliate, volunteers, and the organization where the volunteer project occurs.

The United Way Volunteer Center will be hosting free, monthly Volunteer Leader trainings to develop and engage a new team of volunteer ambassadors in our community.

As a Project Leader you will have the opportunity to work closely with an organization and its clientele to make a significant impact in our community. Not only will you be effecting change in the community you serve, but you will also create meaningful service experiences for other volunteers.

By attending this training, we are asking that you commit to acting as a liaison for United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties' Volunteer Center for a minimum of six months, with one scheduled project a month, or 12 months with one project per quarter, based on your schedule and availability.

This training, held at the United Way office in Daytona Beach, made possible by a grant received from HandsOn Network and Disney.

 ATTENTION
RACE FANS!

Through the continued generosity of Target on ISB & Williamson, United Way and over 125 volunteers will be monitoring the parking lots during February's Speedweeks 2010! This has always been a VERY successful fundraiser thanks to our dedicated parkers and volunteers.

If you are choosing to pay to park for the races, please consider parking at the Target lot!  Not only will 100% of the proceeds be going to the United Way and our local community, but you will have a convenient location to park with walking access to shopping (for those last minute items) and food.  Many of our visitors also like the quick access to Williamson after the races are over to help avoid some of the race day traffic.

Also, if you happen to go into Target on one of these race days, please be sure to say Thanks to the wonderful crew at Target who are so generous to us each year!
