"Give A Day. Get A Disney Day."
There are so many reasons to celebrate. Birthdays. Anniversaries. Reunions. Or any of life's most special moments. But this year, Disney Parks has teamed up with HandsOn Network and its affiliates, including the United Way Volunteer Center, to celebrate something new and that's the good things people do for their communities. In 2010, Disney wants to inspire one million people to volunteer a day of service to a participating organization in their communities and celebrate their good works by giving each of them one day admission to a theme park at DisneylandŽ Resort or Walt Disney WorldŽ Resort, free. Starting January 1, 2010, Guests can go to www.disneyparks.com to search for volunteer opportunities made available through HandsOn Network and its affiliates and sign up for a day of volunteer service. including your United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties' Volunteer Center. Local non-profit partners participating, include American Red Cross, Children's Advocacy Center, Children's Home Society, Stewart-Marchman-ACT Behavioral Healthcare and United Cerebral Palsy of East Central Florida, Inc. Many of the opportunities will be projects that entire families can participate in together.
As part of this program, The United Way Volunteer Center has received a $10,000 grant from the HandsOn Network, the nation's largest volunteer network, to increase the number of family-friendly volunteer projects available locally in 2010. One of those is the Flagler & Volusia Counties Recycle Project in partnership with Flagler County, Volusia County and GEL Recycling.
"It's all about educating kids and getting kids involved in recycling," said Laura Raftery, the owner of GEL Recycling, which will match the United Way dollar-for-dollar for all the aluminum cans collected at its plants in Daytona Beach and Orange City.
Other volunteer projects scheduled for January and February include the Daytona 5K, Caring Cards and Target Parking. All are seeking 100 or more volunteers.
Some important disclaimers: you must pre-register and sign up for eligible volunteer opportunities at disneyparks.com. Ticket quantities are limited. UNITED WAY RECRUITING
VOLUNTEER PROJECT LEADERS
What is a Volunteer Project Leader? Volunteer Project Leaders work in conjunction our United Way Volunteer Center to regularly manage volunteer projects. Project Leaders receive specialized training and help to serve as the "eyes and ears" of the affiliates at each project, acting as a liaison between the affiliate, volunteers, and the organization where the volunteer project occurs.
The United Way Volunteer Center will be hosting free, monthly Volunteer Leader trainings to develop and engage a new team of volunteer ambassadors in our community.
As a Project Leader you will have the opportunity to work closely with an organization and its clientele to make a significant impact in our community. Not only will you be effecting change in the community you serve, but you will also create meaningful service experiences for other volunteers.
By attending this training, we are asking that you commit to acting as a liaison for United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties' Volunteer Center for a minimum of six months, with one scheduled project a month, based on your schedule and availability.
This training made possible by a grant received from HandsOn Network and Disney.
The next available session to register for is Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 3pm-6pm at United Way in Daytona Beach.
To register online please click here or call Laura Zublionis, Volunteer Center Director, at 386-366-9080 for more information. | |
