Residents who are currently experiencing home damage as a result of this week's rainfall should contact the American Red Cross at (386) 226-1400. The agency is logging calls of affected addresses. Information the American Red Cross receives assists in damage assessment coordination, facilitates appropriate levels of response to affected areas and helps determine shelter needs.  For additional information and referrals, please call 2-1-1 or 386-253-0564.

Can you believe it, Hurricane Season is just a few days away? Are you ready? Does your family have an emergency plan in place? Is your Disaster Kit all ready to go? Food stashed away? There are many fantastic resources online to help your and your family prepare for the upcoming season.

We also ask that you Get a Plan Now...to Volunteer! Volunteers are essential in being prepared for, responding to and recovering from disasters. The key is to get trained and affiliated before the storm. To prepare our community to effectively utilize and derive maximum benefit from the contributions of volunteers, and to motivate the public to become affiliated with a relief organization before a disaster occurs, the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties' Volunteer Center and First Call for Help/2-1-1 have established the United in Disasters'  Disaster Volunteer Management Program.

Find out how you and your family can assist our community in times of emergency by clicking here.

United Way is currently recruiting volunteers to support our Call Centers, Volunteer Reception Centers, Emergency Operations, Field Operations and more. Complete job descriptions can be found by clicking here.

UF

Our United Way is teaming up with Jessica Rodell, a UF Grad student who is working on her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior. Since many of you are blessed to be employed at companies that encourage volunteerism, we would like to invite you to participate in this project.

Over the past few years, it has become apparent that employers are becoming increasingly involved in their communities, commonly through employee volunteering efforts. Indeed, organizations such as the United Way organize events that draw thousands of individuals and dozens of employers to volunteer each year.

The critical question is then: Do these activities benefit not only the charitable organization, but also the employees and their employers? Taking an organizational behavior perspective, we hope to gain a better understanding of how employer-sponsored volunteer initiatives and employee participation in volunteer activities impact important work related outcomes.

What do we need to conduct this study?
  • Participants: We are looking for Corporations to encourage their employees who volunteer to complete an online survey (which takes
approximately 15-20 minutes) about their work and volunteer experiences.
  • Coworker and volunteer peer surveys: We are asking that each participant have a coworker and a volunteer peer complete a shorter 5-10 minute survey about the employee's work and volunteer experiences.
  • Time frame: We need to have all surveys completed by August 2009.
What will you receive in return for your support?
  • Aiding the United Way to better understand employee volunteerism, which can help promote and encourage corporate and individual involvement in the community.
  • Feedback report detailing the findings of the study, including evidence of the impact of employee volunteering on their loyalty and commitment to you as their employer.
  • Option to be recognized in the final publication (target journal: Journal of Applied Psychology).
And most importantly, satisfaction of knowing you helped a graduate student complete her doctoral degree!

If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Jessica Rodell.

PS-Those employed at non-profits may also participate!

Are you a member of a group in search of service projects?

A number of the local agencies which The Volunteer Center works with are in search of groups to adopt various service projects.

Some of these include:
  • Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services in search of a volunteer group to help collate and label mailing materials; and/or inspect and rewind cassettes; and/or shelve and pull books.
  • Center for Visually Impaired to paint their building, which is a 2,400 square foot building in Daytona Beach. They will even supply the paint.
  • UCP to assist with construction/installation of a covered patio adjacent to our Education Center.
  • VIND works to repair homes that have been impacted by disaster and are currently working with hurricane and tropical storm clients in the repair of their homes. VIND is in search of skilled & unskilled volunteer assistance for their open cases.
This is just a small sample of the work to be done. If your group is interested in finding out more about the above projects or any others available at this time, please contact Laura Zublionis at 366-9080.
