We have so much to talk about and celebrate this month. Sunday, we kick off both National Volunteer Week 2009 and United Way's Week of thanks, a time when we honor those of you who dedicate yourselves to taking action and problem solving in our community.
April is also Florida Volunteer Month, celebrating and promoting the spirit of volunteerism throughout Florida, and raising awareness about how volunteering changes lives and strengthens communities. Volunteering has never been more important than it is today as our nation experiences great needs and economic difficulties. I'd like to take this time to say thank you for all that you do to LIVE UNITED!!
Don't forget that we'll be honoring some incredible people next week at our 2008 Outstanding Volunteers of the Year Awards Luncheon, Thursday, April 23, 2009.

What is Positive Picketing?? For over 10 years the United Way has sent Volunteers out in to the community on the last day of the National Volunteer Week and United Way's Week of Thanks, to say, "Thanks!" to the community for their support of the United Way.
Individuals from Partner Agencies and the community will be placed at strategic, well-traveled intersections throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties on Friday, April 24, from 7:30 to 9:00 am. These volunteers will be wearing their "Live United" t-shirts, carrying "Thank You picket signs" and smiling and waving at folks that are on their way to work. It's a great, fun way to say, 'Thank You!" to the community! Are you in?
If you are interested in volunteering for Positive Picketing 2009, please contact Laura Zublionis at 386-366-9080 by Wednesday, April 22nd. |
The 21st Annual Halifax/Indian River Cleanup Saturday, May 2, 2009 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Volusia County Environmental Management invites you celebrate Join Hands Day at the annual Halifax/Indian River Cleanup.
Cleaning up both the Halifax and Indian Rivers for the health of the rivers, including an improved habitat for wildlife and a more aesthetically pleasing resource for humans.
There are several different sites to report to along both rivers. Volunteers are asked to report to one of these sites to check in, receive trash bags and plastic gloves.
Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes and bring work gloves. Rakes, shovels, and trash grabbers may be helpful but not necessary. Steps should be taken to protect yourself from the sun. Bottled water is a good idea to bring.
Please contact the United Way Volunteer Center for more information or to register by calling 2-1-1 or 386-253-0563.

Priceless...
While we all believe that volunteers are priceless, the Independent Sector has recently updated the dollar value placed on an hour a volunteer's time. The national estimated dollar value of volunteer time is $20.25 per hour for 2008. Updated figures for each state will be released later this spring.
