SERVE AMERICA ACT PASSES

Last Thursday at 5:03 PM, the U.S. Senate passed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (H.R. 1388/S. 277) by a vote of 79 to 19. This is a major victory for the nonprofit community; bringing us closer to enacting legislation to expand national and community service programs and strengthen the infrastructure for volunteerism within the United Way system and beyond.

Because of the differences between the House and Senate versions of the service legislation, it is now up to the House to decide whether to pass the Senate version or insist on a joint House-Senate conference committee to work out a compromise bill.

We will keep everyone informed as to how the bill progresses and how you may LIVE UNITED by advocating on our behalf.

"Healthcare costs are one of the top concerns for people in our community," said Ray Salazar, Executive Director of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties.  "40% of adults don't buy the medicine they need, have difficulty affording it or reduce the required dosage because of the high cost.

Most pharmacies here and throughout the United States accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards.

"It's truly amazing what we can accomplish when we all work together. So many people and organizations have joined together to make this possible, "said Salazar.  "We invite all area organizations will contact us for a supply of cards, as well as every local business to get cards for all their employees and their families."

Don't Throw Away Your Old Cell Phone!

Donate it to the United Way!

Did you know that cell phones and other electronic equipment contain toxic metals that can pollute the environment?

Instead of throwing away that old cell phone, or keeping it in your closet for years donate it to the United Way.

Your old cell phone will be recycled to help raise money for the United Way.

Depending upon the make and model, the United Way receives anywhere from $.50 to $150 for each phone.  All phones are refurbished and the older models are used for 911/Emergency use.  They are given to Police stations to disburse to Victims of Abuse, Senior Citizens and others in the community that need the phones for emergency use.

Phones can be dropped off:
Flagler County:
UW Service Center
700 East Moody Blvd, Bunnell, FL
Monday-Friday
9am-2pm

Volusia County:
United Way Office
3747 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL
