Write to shine

How does your writing make your personality shine?

In email, social media and most other 21st century communication, you are conversing with your readers. So unleash your personality.

The trouble is most of us were taught to write in a formal, objective style, devoid of feeling, opinion and everything else that makes you unique.

But times have changed.

So think about how to convey your personality. Are you funny, a drama queen, wise, meticulous or driven? Then write that way.

If you're writing for an organization, remember it has a personality too, reflected in its values, brand promise and many other ways.

Connect to your readers by being yourself. Don't worry about the teacher, prof or boss who still haunts you.

I'd like to thank the academy...

My email service provider emailed me an All-Star award. I suspect it's more a publicity ploy for them than an honour for me. They even included a frothy news release template that they encouraged me to personalize and hustle to local media. Who are they kidding?

I asked them for details about why I had been chosen, but all I got was a robo-response saying they might get back to me next week. Right.

Still, I crave applause. I love to make acceptance speeches, so here goes: "Thank you, Constant Contact, for bestowing this honour on me. And thank you, dear readers, for delivering the kinds of open and click-through rates that win awards."

Champagne all around. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Unless this award is followed by cash.

You are not  alone

In case you wondered about that subject line, I'm just testing to see if if really does escalate response rates, as Sean Platt on Copyblogger promised. Of course, I would never stoop to false advertising. So if you opened this in the hopes of companionship, just give me a call at (416) 690-0968.

You can also call if you'd like to learn how to write like you talk--only better. Or for a good  laugh.
