Words that must die

I’ve been ranting again about worn-out expressions we should kill or at least wheel out only for quick cameos.

In last week’s post, I vented about how we should replace thinking outside the box, so overused it’s an oxymoron, with maxing the box.

This week, I tried to thin out some invasive perennials, such as ROI and low-hanging fruit, and added moving forward, palpable and granular to my most-annoying list.

I also recently updated an earlier old post that provided more than 40 alternatives for the raggediest word of our times, awesome.

I’d love to hear your additions. Maybe we can hold a memorial for words that long to rest in peace.

Look Ma, I'm global

My article on six tips to write like a conversation was recently published in CW Bulletin, read by thousands around the world. Here are the six tips:

  1. Write as “I” to “you.”
  2. Interact with hypothetical readers.
  3. Think about what your readers enjoy in conversation.
  4. Ignore fussy grammar rules you’d break when talking.
  5. Talk out loud as you write and rewrite.
  6. Be yourself.

Write like you talk—only better

Will a $30 investment in my new ebook create joy and other big returns? Ask Deanne Kelleher.
“I am so happy I read this. You made me laugh just when I was beginning to feel overwhelmed about the next article I’m going to write. I am blown away at how easily you speak (ha ha – write) about something that is so often a challenge to execute.”
