Local Boy Scout Troop Sends Lintor Books To American Troops In Afganistan
Den 5, Troop 329, in Phoenix, AZ, wrote and compiled their letters and pictures in a published book to send to our troops, along with lots of snacks and goodies.
Staff Sergeant Steele took the time to write back and say, "Thanks so much. The food is long gone, but I'll treasure the book forever."

Looking For A Purposeful Publishing Project? Create A School Directory
When Jack Etter was asked to spearhead a summer program for middle school students at Ellenville Central School District in Ellenville, NY, he wanted something meaning to the students and beneficial for the school community--A first-of-its-kind School Directory was a perfect solution.
They used digital cameras, microsoft word and Smart Boards to compile, organize, write and edit the information. By meeting both technology and language arts standards, they gained a more accurate understanding of the overall writing process.
"My students were very excited to be copiling the first directory at our school," said Mr. Etter. "They were especially honored when the administrative office asked for extra copies."

Summer Science And Global Literacy Camps
Colleen Mielke, a teacher at Shingle Creek Elementary School in Orlando, Florida, also heads up the school's summer programs. She finds summer is a great opportunity to make learning fun for students of all ages.
This year, she is planning a Global Literacy Camp for her primary students. The participants will read lots of folk legends, myths and nonfiction stories about great civilizations and will write and publish books that reflect various literary genres. In the Summer Science Camp, her middle school students will research an area of interest that they have studied - Earth, Sky, Water, Space and/or Biomes. They, then, will produce non-fiction/fact books. According to Ms. Mielke, "The highlight is at the end of each of the summer programs when we invite the parents to attend a World Market or a Science Fair where the students' books will be on display. Both student and parent are so proud of the finished books."

Keep Youth Doing Something-- Like Publishing Books in After School Programs
Last year, Vikki Balet, Program Director for Keep Youth Doing Something in the Los Angeles area, brought publishing to her after school programs in a big way. She set 23 of her sites up with publishing packages, extra book covers and training classes.
"It's been great," said Ms. Balet, "The projects are as varied as the program managers." A most recent publishing project was from East Los Angeles, where many of the students are from Latino families with rich traditions and cultures. The students put together family histories that were sure to become coffee-table items in their homes.
Other publishing ideas for the program include: · Mothers' Day Tributes · Published Interviews With Senior Citizens · Art Books · Storybooks On Display in Local Library
