Increase Parent Involvement Activities With Book Publishing
When it comes to student publishing, it's hard to think of a better way for families to become more integrally invol ved in their childrens' education. The publishing process is far more effective, motivational and rewarding when parents can join in the fun. And believe me, they will want to join in the fun.
The opportunities for family involvement are endless. Both working and stay-at-home parents are able to participate: from helping in the research and development of publishing projects, to assisting in making the actual books, to joining in literacy celebration events. Additionally, parents can run on-site school publishing centers, supervise after-school writing programs and assist with the creation of school or club yearbooks. The end result of any student publishing project is a beautiful hard-bound book that is sure to become a treasured family keepsake for a long, long time.
Deborah Parrott, Miami-Dade County School District's Title I Supervisor, took publishing and parent partnership one step further: she rallied all 250 of her Community Involvement Specialists to publish a book. The CIS trained in a summer workshop, then went back to their schools and created and bound their own Best Practices Guidebook. "It was just great." said Ms. Parrott, "Not only did the books serve as a comprehensive parent involvement resource book, but they also became great documentation for our Title I year-end audit." The program was supported with Title I Parent Involvement funds. For more information, contact Ms. Deborah Parrott directly at dparrott@dadeschools.net

Parents + Publishing = Profit
With the holidays just around the corner, take the opportunity to sell copies of your student books. Just look at what the enterprising parents did last year in Mrs. Travland's 1st Grade Class at Simis Elementary School in Phoenix, AZ:
