    Valentine's Tree

Let FOL help you show your friends, loved ones, vendors or clients how much you care for them. Plant a tree or forest in their name as an enduring demonstration of your thoughts. Trees are longer-lasting than flowers, and less "waistful" than candy!

January, 2008

Happy New Year! In our first newsletter of the year you'll see a wonderful story about how the Future of Life (FOL) is making a difference, a new "Ask the Expert" section featuring Board Member Dr. Tom Lovejoy, news of a generous gift from a local foundation, and a great Valentine's Day idea for you!

FOL Tree Planting Helps a Family Focus on the Future

Janet Berry

Janet Berry, Director of Programs for the Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council, does not consider herself an environmentalist. "But, I am a grandmotherist!" she says. "I want to be sure that my kids and grandkids will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and woods to play in."

Janet got to know The Future of Life, Inc. last year, when her council teamed up with FOL to plant 5,000 trees in southern Pennsylvania and Maryland. It was a life-changing experience for her daughter, says Janet. "My daughter took the tree planting experience to heart - now the whole family is involved in her effort to make sure we have a cleaner, greener future. We recycle, we don't buy bottled water as much - we think about everything we do in terms of the earth and our future."

Tom Lovejoy

What do trees have to do with biodiversity?

Let's ask our Board Member, Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, President of The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment.

Dr. Lovejoy says, "To start with, there are thousands of species of trees, each adapted to live in particular conditions and in communities which range from boreal forests (almost single tree species forests), to tropical rainforests (many hundreds of tree species in a small area), to savannahs (with various tree species scattered around the grassland).

Collectively, the trees of the world probably hold about half of all species of plants, animals and micro-organisms. An individual tree, like an apartment building, harbors many other forms of life, from fungi associated with roots, to epiphytes like orchids, and animals that use the tree for support (e.g. a bird's nest). There are also microscopic species that live in the leaves, and myriad insects, the roles of which range from benign pollinators to destructive bark beetles."

Talk about biodiversity!

Dr. Lovejoy is a world-renowned conservation biologist who made the fate of tropical forests a public issue, he coined the term "biological diversity," and founded the public television series Nature.

The Philadelphia Foundation Provides Grant to FOL

The Future of Life, Inc. is delighted to announce a $50,000 grant from the Malinda R. Farrow Fund, Sidney N. Repplier, Jane Ann Krause Trust and the Ira Jewell Williams Fund of The Philadelphia Foundation to support its program. Announcement of the grant was made by R. Andrew Swinney, President of the Foundation, whose Board of Managers approved the grant in November, 2007. FOL also received a $3,000 grant for general operating support from the Darling Fund of The Philadelphia Foundation.

Thank you for helping us protect the planet, one child and one tree at at time.

Make an online contribution to The Future of Life

The mission of The Future of Life, Inc. (FOL) is to ensure there is a future of life on Earth for all species. FOL pursues this goal through programs that:

  • Educate young people with a curriculum of scientifically-based environmental knowledge;
  • Encourage them to take actions which will help advance the mission; and
  • Ensure that these actions/activities can be repeated and expanded as participants grow in knowledge and capacity
