| Spring Tree Plantings with Future of Life |
|
| This spring we will help youth learn to plant and care for trees in Adamstown, MD with the Girl Scouts of our Nation's Capital, in Felton, DE with the Delmarva Boy Scout Council, and in Coatesville and Lawn, PA with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. Continuing this month as part of FOL's 95th Anniversary tree planting celebration with the Girl Scouts, councils in Virginia, Missouri, Georgia, and Arizona will each plant 95 trees.
Volunteers are still needed for our May 3rd planting in SW Lebanon County, PA - click here to find out more. A big thank you goes to our partners, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Stroud Water Research Center and our children and youth volunteers.

How does planting trees help water quality in nearby streams?
Let's ask our Board member, Bern Sweeney, Director of the Stroud Water Research Center. Dr. Sweeney says, "Forested land plays a huge role with respect to the quality and quantity of fresh water in surface streams. Our research shows that percent forest is often the single best predictor of water quality for streams in a given watershed. There are two main reasons: first, an intact upland forest not only infiltrates rain water significantly better than lawn or farm land but the process of rainwater leaching through forest litter (leaves, decaying wood) carries an enormous amount of dissolved food that supports much of the life of nearby streams. Second, streamside forests shade the stream, promoting natural temperatures and high quality algae, providing substantial food like leaves, seeds, and fruits, while helping filter out pollutants before they can get into the stream."
Trees and water quality go together!
Dr. Sweeney has a Ph.D. in Zoology from the the University of Pennsylvania, and is a widely recognized expert on stream ecology.

FOL Welcomes First Youth Member to Advisory Board |
|
We're so excited to have Laura Webber, 14, join our Advisory Board. Laura will bring a youth perspective to our work and creative partnership ideas, just as she's done with her 4H club. Last April, after she watched the film An Inconvenient Truth, she conceived the idea to plant trees with all the 4-H clubs in the country. Over the next few months, Laura developed the idea into a plan and founded the 4-H Million Trees Project (www.4hmilliontrees.org). Laura cares so much for the environment, because she loves nature and everything in it, especially the animal life.
