Letter from the President
By Ron "Mac" McDowell, Solar Oregon Board President
Dear Friends:
With 2011 quickly drawing to a close, I'd like to take this opportunity to express how grateful I am to everyone who supported Solar Oregon this past year. THANK YOU! to those of you who joined as a member, volunteered at an event, or sent a donation in support of our mission. I am thankful I belong to a community that shares the promise of solar energy and one that values sustainability, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Solar Oregon recently celebrated our thirty-second anniversary and no doubt this year will go down in our history as a period of significant challenge and achievement. We are proud of our accomplishments and we remain committed to being a trusted resource to our members, the general public, policymakers, advocacy groups, the media, and our professional partners.

Solar Spotlight: Solarize Southwest
By Judy Henderson, Solar Oregon Member
Two years ago, I was a solar power skeptic. Two days ago, I generated 3.7 killowatt hours (kWh) of power, on a day when the sun made an appearance, but didn't stay long, and the temperature outside barely reached the 40s.
It's not that I didn't believe in the environmental benefits of solar power, but I was convinced that solar panels were too costly and that there wasn't enough sun in western Oregon to generate power effectively. It took Solarize Southwest to convince me otherwise.

Where's the solar on public buildings? (or Why the 1603 grant should be important to you)

It seems obvious. Many of our most prominent public buildings appear to be excellent sites for solar, and there's no doubt that the agencies and organizations that own these buildings would stand to benefit from a long-term source of power at reasonable cost at least as much as the average homeowner, so why are examples of such installations so few and far between? In short, why aren't the leading institutions in our communities visibly doing more to lead the way towards a sustainable energy future? >>Click here to read more |
