Greetings!
Quite without planning it the nursery is all decked out in red, white and blue for the July 4th holiday! With a backdrop of still-flowering Matilija Poppies providing the white, we have red and blue splashes from our Scarlet Buglers, Heart-leaved Penstemon, Island Snapdragon and Margarita BOP Penstemons! With careful planning there is much color to be found in a native garden. With each passing season we mourn the end of beautiful shows of, say, lilacs, or sages, and now the Matilija's but each new season brings the excitement of another round of color. As the summer heats up we are looking forward to a great show from the California Fuschsias with Coyote Mint in a great supporting role. We hope you enjoy the burst of fireworks on July 4th but continue to enjoy the show in your California native garden all year long. Happy July 4th!

PLANT OF THE MONTH
Galvezia speciosa Island Bush Snapdragon

Bright green foliage, and red 1" long snapdragon-like flowers make this long-lived perennial a favorite with landscapers, gardeners and hummingbirds! Island Bush Snapdragon will flower year round, but with the heaviest bloom in winter and spring. Branches tend to be long and arching and will climb up and intertwine with other plants. Plant in a border with other native perennials, over walls, down banks or use as a large-scale groundcover. This versatile plant will also tolerate the dry shade under oak trees. It is drought tolerant but for the best flower show a little extra water is recommended. This plant is native to the Channel Islands of Southern California but in our experience seems to flourish inland too.
Every purchase of our "Plant of the Month" at our retail nursery partners will generate a $0.50 donation to PLANT WITH PURPOSE to help villages in third world economies restore farms, plant trees and create local jobs. |

GARDEN OF THE MONTH
Balboa Park Native Plant Demonstration Garden

This Native Plant Garden is a small one acre demonstration garden located in San Diego at the west end of the Balboa Park Tennis Club (2221 Morley field Drive) tennis courts at Morley Field on Balboa Park's East Mesa, and is just south of the Upas and Alabama Street intersections. An interpretive brochure is provided with information on, and identification of, 36 of over 100 plants on display, which are drought tolerant California native plants suitable for home and landscape use. A quarter mile long footpath loops around the garden for an easy stroll, showing the wonderful flowers and the foliage of some of San Diego's 2,600 types of native plants. More here |
