Heading Back-to-School Prepared!

Back to School

Rainbow Days, in partnership with Captain Hope's Kids and Dallas Market Center, are pleased to announce that the 20th annual Back-to-School Celebration held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, had a record-setting attendance of over 600 children, youth and their parents from local area shelters.  This year, Rainbow Days was pleased to expand the event to reach even more children residing in area shelters by including new partner sites from Collin and Tarrant Counties.  Families enjoyed a fun afternoon filled with games, refreshments, music and positive school messages.  Upon leaving the party, each school-aged child received a brand new backpack filled with supplies, a new school uniform and a variety of special gifts and prizes to head back to school with a fresh start.  Gratitude goes to the dozens of donors who gave financial contributions, supplies, refreshments and met other important needs.

Back to SchoolSpecial thanks to the nearly 150 volunteers who gave a helping hand to make this year's event a success.  In addition to individual volunteers, Rainbow Days also recognizes donors and volunteers from: AT&T Finance, AT&T Pioneers - Ginger Oak Pioneers, Bank of America, Captain Hope's Kids, Citi - Working Parents Network, Dallas Market Center, DISD, Gatekeeper Systems, KPMG's Network of Women, National Charity League - Preston Bluebonnet & Golden Corridor Chapters, Mary Kay, Neiman Marcus, Random Acts of Kindness, Team Networking - Richardson Chapter, Tiff's Treats, and UT Dallas - Office of Student Volunteering Jumpstart, who, along with numerous individual donors, donated backpacks, school supplies, refreshments and other items for the event.

Team Connection

During the last week of July 2011, children and staff at Cummings and Harry Stone Recreation Centers participated in Rainbow Days' Team Connection summer activity.

Team Connection teaches children positive ways to express themselves through team-oriented events, field activities, and arts and crafts. The events were a celebration of healthy and fun alternatives to using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Stay FreshChildren and staff enjoyed potato sack races, tug of war, bean bag toss, bowling, ring toss, and kickball together! There was an abundance of laughter and smiles throughout the day among both children and adults, and each child received their own Rainbow Days' T-Shirt and got to color in the t-shirt's drug-free message: Stay Fresh Say No to Drugs.

Outdoor Adventure Camp

Outdoor Adventure Camp

The heat was no obstacle for the 238 children and youth who attended this year's Outdoor Adventure Camps.  Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, Rainbow Days expanded the program into two separate camps to better meet the needs of the campers with age appropriate activities.  At Camp Whispering Cedars, 134 children, ages 5-9, enjoyed swimming, crafts, puppet shows, games, hiking, and special classes which included an educational class on reptiles.  Although there were many outdoor activities, including a 25 foot water slide, the children never complained about the heat, and focused on making summer memories!  At Mt. Lebanon, 104 youth, ages 10-15, braved the heat for a camp adventure that included ropes courses, a zip line, swimming, team building and other fun activities.  One child even shared that he purposely missed a chance to go to Six Flags during the camp week so that he "wouldn't miss Outdoor camp!"  Both camps featured Rainbow Days support groups teaching life skills and reminding them to make healthy choices.  Special thanks to volunteers, bus drivers, food donor, Hunger Busters, and hard-working staff who helped create a wonderful summertime experience for these children.

Thank You Dr. Anthony B. Henegar

 Dr. Henegar

A Special Thanks to Dr. Anthony B. Henegar and his staff in Irving for their $400 contribution toward the purchase of school supplies benefitting children in the Community Connection program.  Employee Myra Rodriguez of Dr. Henegar's office championed the coordination of requests and donations that produced such winning results in a short amount of time. Dr. Anthony Henegar's office also generously donated 155 toothbrushes and individual tubes of toothpaste to brighten the smiles of children attending the Family Connection program's Kids' University camp this past June. The generosity of Dr. Anthony B. Henegar's office has us all beaming from ear to ear.
