Univision Radio

Univision RadioRainbow Days staff, Leo Gutierrez, and Norma Westurn of Centro de Mi Salud participated in a live interview on Univision Radio's morning show, Buenos Dias Dallas Forth Worth, to discuss mental health and juveniles on February 25th. The interview occurred following a live conversation with the president of Children at Risk on mental health policy. Questions and comments were received from listeners and Mr. Gutierrez spoke to some of the issues youth face in the schools such as extreme stress, worry, anxiety, anger and hunger. Healthy resources were identified to address some of the mental health needs of youth.
Kick-Butts Day
Kick Butts DayEach day in the United States approximately 4,000 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 try their first cigarette. According to the World Health Organization 5 million people are dying from tobacco each year with one death every 6 seconds.  Kick Butts Day is a day specifically designated for youth nationwide to campaign against tobacco in an effort to protect one another from exposure and addiction to tobacco.  On March 23rd Rainbow Days will celebrate Kick Butts Day 2011 and give children from Mount Auburn Elementary the opportunity to actively demonstrate their opposition to tobacco as they form line formations with their bodies to spell out WE KICK BUTTS. An aerial snapshot will be taken from the roof and shared with the school.

This Side Up! Family Fun Center in Plano

This Side UpOn February 26th Rainbow Days began a new partnership with This Side Up! Family Fun Center in Plano. Families from Mosaic House and Shared Housing enjoyed a family night out at This Side Up! Family Fun Center's 8,500 sq. foot non-profit center which specifically caters to families and provides a safe, family-friendly environment while giving parents skills and quality activities they need to move from surviving to thriving.  Weekend activities like parent/child date nights provide fun together time and always include an opportunity for parents to teach their kids about a value.  Families learn to affirm each other.  One of the activities that the families played during this weekend event was like an activity in Rainbow Days' core Curriculum-Based Support Group (CBSG®) Program that the children had already participated in and the extra activity reinforcement was a huge hit!   While music was played a "clapping hand" was passed around in each family.  When the music stopped each family member expressed what they liked about the person holding the hand.  At the end everyone received a "clapping hand" to help them remember their individual special qualities.  The children enjoyed snacks, popcorn, drinks and Bingo prizes.  A big thank you to Sarah Morris the Executive Director of This Side Up! We look forward to a continued relationship with This Side UP! so that more families can be enriched by the positive environment and family bonding which mirror so many of Rainbow Days' messages.

Build-a-Bike

On January 28th the Family Connection team took program participants from New Beginning Center to the Omni Hotel in Las Colinas for Build-a-Bike, an event hosted by Vertafore, a technology provider for insurance companies. Vertafore invited children of Rainbow Days' Family Connection program to work alongside their employees to build bicycles. David Stout, Vice President of Sales Operations for Vertafore, kicked off the event by inviting a few children to share how they had benefitted from participation in Rainbow Days.  During the event Participants were placed on different teams made up of Vertafore employees who worked with the children to build bicycles which became the children's bikes to keep. Each participant left the event with a special bike and a treasured memory. The activity promoted teamwork, education and collaboration and was meaningful for the children as well as for the Vertafore employees.  One of the children asked to have the microphone at the conclusion of the event and proceeded to give everyone a sincere thank you. Her words were, "It is nice to know that there are people who do care.  This event proves this."

Rainbow Days is grateful for the generous people who made this happen, Ms. Christine Sciascia, Mr. David Stout, Ms. Lori Brennan and all of the great employees of Vertafore. Thank you!
