Hip Hoppin' with Mary Poppin'

CB2010This month, Hip Hoppin' with Mary Poppin' took to the road for successful tour stops at Hillcrest Church and Oaklawn United Methodist Church! At both camps, a total of 205 kids were able to participate in a variety of theater-related classes - from creative writing and choreography, to prop and stage design. Throughout the week, kids were able to exercise their creativity, make their own props, (including kites for "Let's Go Fly a Kite", gloves for "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"), as well as design spoons, pillows, silly hats, and chimney sweeps for other songs in the performance.

CB2010Each camp was divided into groups, with each group reflecting one of Rainbow Days' major messages - I Am, I Can, I Have, I Will, and I Believe (as well as I Dream, I Imagine, I Aspire, I Succeed, and I Accomplish at Camp Broadway II).  At the end of the week, each group performed a song from the Disney movie Mary Poppins.

At Rainbow Days' performing arts camp, children are able to get away from the shelters and experience being onstage in front of an audience while showing off their many talents. This is also an opportunity for the children to be in the spotlight in front of their parents and friends, show off their skills and imagination, and help inspire one another - believing that anything is possible.
Staff Changes and Updates

Shawn WillsAs some of you may already be aware, Shawn Wills' last day at Rainbow Days was Friday, August 16th.  In the two years that Shawn was Director of Development, she made many contributions including the launching of the Heroes of Hope Society, cultivating new corporate volunteer and donor groups,  and overseeing POG and Texas Hold'em to name a few.  We certainly wish her the best in her new endeavors!

Tiffany BeaudineTiffany Beaudine has been named the Director of Development.  Tiffany has worked with Rainbow Days for ten years this October and has been extremely instrumental in helping us achieve our long term goal of diversifying our revenue streams by increasing individual, corporate and foundation support.  Tiffany began as a Resource Development Coordinator and has been in the role of Resource Development Manager for the past few years.  Assuming the role of Development Director is an appropriate next step in her professional growth and just the person our organization needs to direct our continued efforts on growing individual giving.  Please let Tiffany know if you have any questions concerning how to make a donation to Rainbow Days.

Wendi McMullenWendi McMullen will be returning to Rainbow Days part-time as our new Special Events Director, responsible for Texas Hold 'Em and the Pot of Gold Luncheon. Rainbow Days on Univision Radio
Univision RadioUnivision has given Rainbow Days a unique opportunity by providing 1 hour of radio time for three weeks in July. A rebroadcast was aired for a Sunday slot. The radio program with host Claudia Torrescano and Rainbow Days staff Leo Gutierrez.  The program is an opportunity for the Hispanic community to learn more about Rainbow Days and its services, to allow dialog with Hispanic parents, and to inform them of drug trends and available resources in the community.

Rainbow Days will also be working with Univision on other projects through their VIA-23 Community affairs program and may be offered a spot that will be aired monthly. Rainbow Days has already been a highlighted organization and continues to serve a rapidly growing Hispanic population. Rainbow Days' partnership with Univision is a testament to our commitment to children, youth and families.

Stomp Out Drugs Hike

Stomp Out DrugsRainbow Days staff member, Robert Lopez, lead 25 kids from Good Shepherd Community Center in West Dallas on a hike through the woods of Arlington's Veteran Park on July 20, 2010.  Prior to the hike, Robert provided the kids with some substantial nourishment and refreshment via a cookout in the park complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, and lots of water. Following lunch, each child made and decorated a sun visor in preparation for the hiking adventure.Stomp Out Drugs Lastly, Robert shared with the children that there was a twofold purpose to the hike ahead: to stomp out drugs and march for health, and also to explore, have fun and enjoy nature. The children and staff members of Good Shepherd all agreed that a new hiking adventure with friends and safe people was a much more exciting way to spend an afternoon than to giving one's life away to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Volunteer in the Spotlight: Aron Finn
Aron FinnAron Finn, a first-time volunteer at this summer's Kids' University II, is our spotlight for the month.

Aron learned about Rainbow Days through a friend of a friend, Elizabeth Lockhart, who is a long-term volunteer at Rainbow Days. After hearing Elizabeth talk about the organization, Aron became interested and wanted to get involved. "The idea of it is great. Once you hear about what [Rainbow Days] does, it's hard not for that to hit your heart," said Aron. "Helping out these kids' education in a healthy environment is really important to me".

When asked if anything specifically touched him at the graduation ceremony, Aron mentioned that he overheard a kid ask the president of the University if his friend could live with him. "That really brought everything down to earth for me," Aron explained.

Impressed by the kids and their willingness to learn, Aron would love to continue working with Rainbow Days, adding, "Rainbow Days is doing a lot of good and I want to be involved in that. I can tell they are really making a difference in kids' lives."

Thank you Aron, for your time and commitment to Rainbow Days!
