Highlights from Kids' University
by Stephanie Tilden

This week was the kick-off of Rainbow Days' summer camp Kids' University (KU) at UT Dallas.

At camp, approximately 125 children from Dallas area homeless shelters have been split up into 5 different age groups - I Am, I Can, I Have, I Will, and I Believe (which are the major message of Rainbow Days). In each group, the children are able to go through a week in which they participate in classroom activities while learning about nutrition, math, art, music, chemistry and many other subjects from various teachers.

KU 2010 2

KU allows the children to have a real-life college experience while encouraging them to reach for the stars.  "This camp makes me happy," said Jessica, one of the children attending camp this week.  Jessica plans to go on to college and become a veterinarian, "I'm learning about myself."

Through Kids University, the children not only have the opportunity to explore various subjects, but there are also activities which help them identify their individuality. While expressing their creativity, the children learn about what makes each of them unique and they have the ability to show off their distinct talents. The camp week ends with a graduation ceremony where each child has a moment in the spotlight, when his/her name is called and he/she receives a personal diploma from Kids University. This entire week, filled with learning and fun, allows each child to set a goal to help shape a positive future. Kids University is an experience of a lifetime, one that these children will definitely never forget.

Kick Butts Day!

Kick Butts DayThis past Spring, Rainbow Days staff, Robert Lopez, and children at Anita Martinez Recreation Center celebrated Kick Butts Day 2010, at national day to promote smoking awareness among kids.  Since Kick Butts Day as quickly followed by Easter, the children at Anita Martinez Recreation Center used their talent and imagination to create unique posters with persuasive tobacco-free messages.

Board Member in the Spotlight: Akhil Uniyal
Akhil UniyalAkhil Uniyal has served on the Board of Directors for Rainbow Days since 2006.

As a Board member, Akhil has served on the Public Relations & Resource Development Committees and currently serves as chair of the Audit Committee.  Most recently, Akhil recommended Rainbow Days to be the beneficiary of the Harvard Business School Club of Dallas' annual gala.  This event raised $10,000 for Rainbow Days in 2009 and the club has selected Rainbow Days to be the co-beneficiary again for 2010.

Over the past few years Akhil has had the opportunity to discuss Rainbow Days with other nonprofit leaders.  "They always have great things to say about the organization and Cathey Brown.  This is such an amazing testament to the staff and to Cathey, and the impact they are making in the lives of the families they serve," says Akhil.  And that is exactly what he shares with people who have not heard about Rainbow Days.

Akhil and his wife have 3 children.  Akhil was born in India and attended school in India, the UK and the United States.  However, for the past 15 years the Uniyals have called Dallas home.  He enjoys spending his time traveling, taking in a movie (his favorite is The Pursuit of Happyness), and participating in a variety of sports.
