Rainbow Days' is grateful for our team of over 400 volunteers who help us and give more than 3,800 hours in service each year. Whether one day a week or a few hours a month, we are thankful for our faithful volunteers. We need your help to make our programs a success this fall! For more information on volunteering with Rainbow Days, please contact Lynette Smith, Volunteer Coordinator, at lynettes@rdikids.org or 214-217-3831.
Support Group Co-Facilitator: Help co-facilitate a small group of 6-12 children using our Curriculum-Based Support Group curricula, which incorporates guided discussions, art, games and creative activities. Groups are held at one of 60 sites throughout the Dallas area at partnering shelters, recreation centers and schools at various times throughout the week. A 6-hour training session is required prior to serving as a group co-facilitator. Groups meet weekly at a set time in approximately 2 hours shifts (including preparation time) in either day and/or evening commitments. The next training is scheduled for Thursday, November 1 from 6pm to 9pm at the Rainbow Days Office. A light dinner will be served at 5:30pm. Please RSVP to Lynette if you plan to attend.
Art With a Heart: Serve as a mentor for the day! Children are matched with a caring adult mentor for a day long "themed" arts retreat on a Saturday that incorporates a basic life skill. As a mentor, you and the child will work together to create a visual art project and/or performing arts production that is presented to an audience at the end of the day. There are currently 3 Art with a Heart events scheduled:
Saturday, October 20, 9am to 3pm at Dallas Arboretum (the focus of this Art with a Heart is Photography)
Saturday, November 10, 10am to 3pm at Wishire Baptist Church
Saturday, January 19, 10am to 3pm at Rainbow Days (the focus for this Art with a Heart is Ceramics)
Please RSVP to Lynette if you would like to volunteer and to get more details.
Family Outings: We provide special "excursions" from the homeless shelter for children and their parent(s), or guardian to strengthen these vulnerable families. Whether a trip to a museum, an amusement park, a restaurant or a baseball game, these outings are a special time for children to bond with their families and experience something that a child with a home normally gets to experience. There are currently 2 Family Outings scheduled:
Satruday, November 17, 2pm to 9pm, Dallas Help the Homeless Walkathon
Saturday, December 8, time: TBD, "Movie with Santa"
Please RSVP to Lynette if you would like to volunteer and to get more details.

Make Sure Halloween Candy is Safe
As kids get ready to hit the sidewalks going door to door in their newest costume, it's important to remember that a cavity may not be the only surprise in store in their goodie bags. Here are some great Halloween candy safety tips to heed and implement this year. Make sure your child understands and follows them to the letter.
- Don't eat anything that has a loose wrapper. Many times if a wrapper is suspect, the candy inside is also. Tightly wrapped packaging is a good sign that someone hasn't unwrapped and re-wrapped the candy, something that would be hard to do well.
- Give your child a hearty meal BEFORE they go out trick or treating. They won't be as hungry and less likely to gorge themselves on everything they collect along the way.
- Inspect all candy before you let your child eat it. This may be the hardest to enforce, but these days it sadly may be necessary. You might do a variation on this and allow them to eat from certain house of friends that you know and trust. Work this out beforehand, however. Don't leave it up to the child.
- Try not to give out any choking hazards such as gum, small toys, hard candies and the like to very small children. They're all out there laughing and running, having a good time, and it's all too easy to - well, you get the picture.
- Check all fruits and homemade treats for punctures and cuts. Every year we hear stories of apples and other fruits laden with pins, needles and razor blades. Inspect these treats carefully.
- To protect yourself and maybe start a new trend in your neighborhood, maybe affix some of those free address labels you get tons of in the mail to the candy you give out, taking responsibility and helping out your own neighbors peace of mind.
- Ask your children to notice who gives them what. Now, This won't be 100% accurate or even often remembered, but planting a seed in their heads can work wonders. Try not to do it in a frightening manner, maybe phrasing it as an attempt to be able to thank them later.
-
The number one, unbreakable, highest of high, most important rule of Halloween candy safety is WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT! If this one was followed to the letter, 99% of all Halloween candy safety problems would disappear.
