New Capacity Building Opportunities for Rural Affiliates!

Habitat for Humanity of Colorado is excited to announce new capacity building opportunities for rural Habitat affiliates.  These opportunities will include additional training for your affiliate as well as new opportunities through HFHC's premier consulting partnership, the Cornerstone Project.

Training Opportunities
Knowledge Cafes: HFHC is hosting one-day trainings that provide the opportunity for networking, sharing best practices and learning from subject matter experts.  The Knowledge Cafes offered in November 14, 2009, (Montrose) and January 23, 2010, (Canon City) will offer the same session topics.

Camp Colorado 2010: Together We Can Build It: Camp Colorado will for the first time feature a Rural Forum - highlighting workshops, networking opportunities, and hot topics relevant to affiliates serving rural communities.

Cornerstone Project
With three years of experience and data from the Cornerstone Project behind us, HFHC has identified three elements of the project that will be changed in order to further improve both the process and the outcomes for affiliates and families.

1. Eligibility - The Cornerstone Project will now be a program that focuses solely on rural affiliates.  This change is based both on need and demand from affiliates.
2. Breadth of Focus - Each round of the project will be focused on one tenet of organizational capacity.  In 2010 partners will focus on resource development.
3. Duration of Partnership - The Partnership will be extended from a one-year term to a two- year term in order to work more in-depth with partners and ensure lasting change.  The first year will entail training and working toward minimum standards, while year two will address specific growth needs.

In order to apply for the Cornerstone Project, affiliates must attend the Power of Collaboration workshop offered at the Knowledge Cafes in Montrose and Canon City.  For a complete overview of the Cornerstone Project please email karen@habitatcolorado.org.

Upcoming Legislative Agenda

State CapitolHFHC is excited to engage affiliates in our new process for developing advocacy priorities in 2010!  Staff and the Government Relations Committee will put together a draft of legislative priorities for the upcoming state legislative session.  Affiliates will then have two weeks to review and provide feedback on the proposed agenda.  This will include comments on the bills identified, as well as potential legislation that was not.

Affiliate input is critical, as HFHC is the face and voice for Habitat in the state legislature.  The Government Relations Committee will modify the agenda as appropriate, and submit to the Board for final approval.  This agenda becomes the framework for HFHC's advocacy work for the 2010 legislative session.

We look forward to working with affiliates on advocacy and hope you are as excited about this as we are.  If you have questions or comments about this process or upcoming/potential legislation please contact Kim at 303-454-8965 or kim@habitatcolorado.org.
Xcel New Homes and Habitat Partnership Coming Soon

Xcel logoHFHC and Xcel Energy have partnered to have all Habitat homes in Xcel Colorado gas service areas rated by third party energy raters.  HFHC is currently working with the Xcel New Homes Colorado Program to identify energy raters in the natural gas service area willing to do energy ratings on Habitat homes free of charge to Habitat affiliates.  Last week, HFHC put out an RFP to energy raters, and we will be selecting raters willing to enroll in the Xcel program the week of October 12th.  If you would like your current energy rater to respond to the RFP, please email to ryan@habitatcolorado.org or stefka@habitatcolorado.org and ask for a copy.

This partnership will allow affiliates in Xcel's natural gas service area to get all their homes rated free of charge.  In addition, simply by having their raters enroll each house in the program, affiliates will be eligible for a builders rebate of up to $2,000 per home based on each home's HERS index rating.  Visit Xcel's New Homes Colorado Program website for more details or call Ryan Economy at 303-454-8965 x3.

Arkansas Valley Correctional to Construct Wooden Furniture for Sale in ReStores

Habitat Colorado and the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility have been in talks to allow affiliate ReStores to buy wooden furniture from the prison's vocational carpentry program for re-sale in ReStores.  We are excited to announce Arkansas Valley Correctional has agreed to begin taking orders from affiliate ReStores.

This new program, unaffiliated with our cabinet and truss program at the Crowley County Correctional Facility, is an opportunity for ReStores to sell brand new indoor and outdoor furniture.  As the main goal of the Correctional Facility's carpentry program is offender education, the furniture is sold to ReStores at very low cost, which can then be marked up at the ReStore to generate revenue for your homebuilding program.

Please contact Steve Keys at the prison at 719-267-3520 x3213 or steven.keys@doc.state.co.us to get a catalog or place an order.  In the near future, Habitat Colorado will be expanding this relationship to include countertops for affiliate home construction.
