There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays

1000st home EdwardsOn December 19, Habitat of Eagle and Lake Counties and Habitat Colorado kicked off the 1000 Homes Campaign to build the next 1000 homes in three years with the dedication of the 1001st-1004th homes in Edwards, Colorado.

The Lopez, Katz, Morales, and Lopez-Loera families all celebrated the dedication of their new homes in Edwards just in time for the holidays with dozens of other Habitat supporters from the Vail Valley.

At the dedication ceremony, State Senator Dan Gibbs, Dist 16, noted that Habitat's development of affordable housing in the Vail Valley is helping local mountain communities tackle one of his constituents' highest concerns.

These four homes represent the first steps toward an ambitious goal set by Habitat for Humanity of Colorado.  Over the next three years, Habitat affiliates across the state will strive to build 1000 new safe, decent, affordable homes here in Colorado and abroad.  To show their support and commitment to this goal, HFH Eagle and Lake Counties designated their tithe for these four homes to Habitat Paraguay.  Habitat Paraguay was chosen as the partner country for the 1000 Homes campaign based on average home cost and production capacity,  in order to maximize the effectiveness of affiliate tithes during the campaign.

HFHC Awards $10,000 to Four Affiliates from Xcel Energy

1000 homes logoHabitat's Resource Allocation Committee recently announced which innovative energy efficient construction proposals from affiliates would receive funding from an Xcel Energy Foundation grant.  While it was unfortunate that our resources could not fund all of the projects, it was exciting to see the innovative techniques employed by affiliates.

The committee decided to fund one each of the following four types of projects:  active solar, geothermal, alternative construction methods, and alternative construction materials.  The projects below will each receive $2,500 toward their innovative efforts.

Eagle and Lake County Habitat for Humanity
for utilization of Structural Insulated Panels on the Fox Hollow Project
Telluride Habitat for Humanity for use of geothermal technology in their Norwood subdivision
La Plata Habitat for Humanity toward efforts to incorporate active solar hot water heating systems in all 2009 homes
San Luis Valley Habitat for Humanity for the use of mud bricks

Congratulations to these affiliates and all affiliates for their efforts to make all Habitat homes in Colorado as energy efficient as possible so that they are sustainably affordable for Habitat homeowners.

House Parties for Habitat

Blue Spruce HFH in Evergreen recruits local residents to host a seriers of dining and house parties for their Genesee Entertains fundraising series.  However, if you do not have such a motivated group of party-going locals, individual house parties can work just as good.

Flatirons HFH was lucky enough to have a board member host just such a house party.  40 of his friends and business associates came together for a for a night of fine wine and food, raising $16,000 in one evening.  Due to the large size of the party Flatirons HFH split the cost of the event with the host, but usually they try to encourage the host to cover the entire cost.

To contact Blue Spruce HFH about Genesee Entertains, email Pandora Reagan or visit their website.  For information about individual house parties, contact Jan Hawley.
