Habitat Completes 1000th Home in Colorado!
After 30 years of hard work from volunteers, sweat equity from partner families, and generous donations from the community, Habitat for Humanity has completed its 1000th home in Colorado.
On November 22, Christine Hertz and her son moved into the 1000th home, built by HFH St. Vrain Valley, just in time for Christine to host family and friends for Thanksgiving. In addition, Juana Mendoza, a Habitat homeowner since 1995, celebrated paying off her home in full with a mortgage burning and was handed the deed to her house.
In attendance were several state legislators, Longmont City Council members, Habitat staff and volunteers, and Christine's new neighbors. The significance of the 1000th home was recognized by Roger Lange, Mayor of Longmont, and Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, Andrew Romanoff, who both gave moving speeches to honor the occasion.
Speaker Romanoff remarked that Habitat's work is needed especially in a state that ranks 50th in the nation for support of affordable housing, "The good news is, when you're 50th, there's only one direction to go. That's why we need Habitat."
The Speaker also noted the direct link between housing and other issues, most notably education.

Come Celebrate the Beginning of the Next 1000 Homes
Habitat celebrated the 1000th home built in Colorado in November. While this was a momentous occasion for everyone involved in Habitat in Colorado over the last 30 years, Habitat's work is not complete. People across Colorado still reside in sub-standard housing and Habitat provides a viable option for them to move into safe, decent affordable homes .
To kick off the effort to complete the next 1000 homes in Colorado and internationally, over the next three years, HFH Eagle and Lake Counties and Habitat Colorado will host a celebration of the 1001st-1004th homes completed in the state. HFH Eagle and Lake Counties will dedicate homes for four families from the Vail Valley who have put in hundreds of hours of time since last spring to build their own homes just in time for the holidays.
Where: Fox Hollow in Edwards, CO
When: Friday, December 19, 2008, at 4pm
All are welcome so please come help us kick off the campaign to build the next 1000 homes in Colorado because - There's No Place Like Home. |
Habitat Youth Leadership Conference Imparts Valuable Lessons By Derek Wittman - Flatirons HFH
The 2008 Habitat Youth Leadership Conference was held on Nov. 7-9 in St. Louis. Participants attended a panel discussion on green building and were able to choose from among a variety of workshops facilitated by representatives of HFHI, campus chapters, and affiliates, including one on Youth United best practices presented by Lauren Grybowski and Sean Buck of the Metro Denver affiliate. Key points made in several session about implementing a successful youth program were:
- The importance of maintaining good communication between campus chapters and affiliates by designating a liason.
- Early selection of new youth leaders with affiliate input to encourage smooth leadership transition.
- The importance of empowering youth to be the driving forces behind their own programs.
- Avoiding micro-management and command and control structures.

Grants Management Corner for Affiliates
While the Habitat for Humanity of Colorado mortgage purchase budget for calendar year 2009 is still being considered, CHFA and HFHC will still hold training sessions for all affiliates. All affiliates who are interested in selling mortgages to CHFA in 2009 or in the future are required to attend one mandatory training session at the beginning of the New Year. The training will cover basic requirements of the mortgage sale program, review of required documents, and frequently asked questions. Several CHFA representatives and HFHC staff will conduct the training and answer your questions related to the mortgage sale process. All three trainings are the same so each affiliates is only required to attend one session. PLEASE NOTE SOME DATE CHANGES:
