State CapitolGovernment Awareness Campaign 2008

Mark your calendars - or look at your HFHC calendar, where it is already marked - for this year's Legislative Luncheon, April 9, 2008, and Habitat Builds Colorado Day April 19, 2008.  Once again HFHC will host affiliates, families, and state legislators near the state capitol for a luncheon and an opportunity to engage legislators from across the state in our mission.  If you have a homeowner who you feel would be an effective speaker for this event, or if you would like to attend yourself, please contact Stefka or any member of the Government Awareness Committee and get involved in this wonderful event.

The luncheon is also an opportunity to kick off HFHC's premier public relations event:  Habitat Builds Colorado Day.  For the second year, Colorado affiliates will be invited to join HFHC by hosting a build or other event to involve government officials, from your local planning and zoning commission to your US Congressional representatives.  Each participating affiliate will receive a minimum of $3,000, and will benefit from a coordinated media campaign as well as enhanced relationships with the individuals who are so important to our mission.  A letter of intent will be required from affiliates interested in Habitat Builds Colorado Day, and details will follow via email.

Paul Johnson, Pikes Peak HFH ED Wins Leadership Award

Congratulations to Paul Johnson, Executive Director of Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity, for winning the Modeling the Way Community Leadership Award from Leadership Pikes Peak.  Under Paul's leadership and vision during the 2006-2007 fiscal year, Pikes Peak HFH welcomed four families into their new homes, completed the nine-home Maxwell Street development, and also broke ground on two more developments on which 12 more homes will be constructed.

Leadership Pikes Peak will present the award to Paul at their banquet, Change Today, Create Tomorrow: A Celebration of Community Leadership.  For more information about the banquet, visit http://www.leadershippikespeak.org/.
LoriFarewell and Good Luck to Lori Vaclavik, HFH of Metro Denver ED

We would like to congratulate Lori Vaclavik, Executive Director of HFH of Metro Denver, on accepting the position of Director of International Engagement with Habitat for Humanity International.  She will begin her new position in March but, thankfully, she will still be based in Denver.

During Lori's 12 year tenure as Executive Director, HFH of Metro Denver constructed simple, decent, affordable homes for more than 250 families!  Over 1300 people have a home they can call their own as a result.  We salute Lori for her tireless efforts towards the elimination of poverty housing in the Denver metro area.

We would like to wish Lori good luck, and we look forward to working with her in her new position.  Lori will attend Camp Colorado and will be available to speak with affiliates on how they can connect with Habitat's global mission.

CHFA Sponsoring Networking Café at Camp Colorado CHFA logo

HFHC is excited to announce that the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority will be sponsoring the Networking Café at Camp Colorado on the afternoon of Friday, May 16.  The Networking Café will provide the opportunity for affiliates to meet with exhibitors, network, share best practices and enjoy a great cup of coffee.

The Colorado Housing and Finance Authority has been a committed partner with HFHC helping affiliates to serve more families across the state.  Through a unique partnership with CHFA, affiliates are given the opportunity to sell mortgages - accelerating asset recovery - at no discount. This program is the only one of its kind in the nation, and is accomplished through innovative bond structuring on the part of CHFA, who continues to extend the 0% interest loan to Habitat homeowners. The mortgage purchase program is an opportunity to invest a large amount of capital into building more homes, and is instrumental in building the capacity of an affiliate.

Camp Colorado 08HFHC appreciates CHFA's partnership for Camp Colorado: Building Blocks for Success!

La Plata HFH Donors Get Tax Credits
Give your donors extra incentive to give in-kind and cash contributions.

The State of Colorado Office of Economic Development recently approved La Plata HFH as an enterprise zone project.  This distinction allows La Plata HFH donors to receive a tax credit, rather than claim a deduction, on their state income tax returns when donating to La Plata.

Enterprise zones across the state are areas which state has deemed economically distressed.  Eligible organizations must have their office physically located within an enterprise zone.  Visit http://www.state.co.us/oed/enterprise-zone/index.cfm for more information.
