I have always thought that this quote was originated by the South African golfer Gary Player who after sinking a monster putt and hearing a lady in the crowd say "That was a lucky shot!" responded with "Well, ma'am, the more I practice, the luckier I get!". However, googling on the phrase attributes it to other golfers as well as to Thomas Jefferson who talked about 'hard work' rather than 'practice'.....but I guess that is pretty much the same thing.
