Welcome Back from the President

Olsen

It is great to have school back in session again because the place comes alive when the students are here. We have an excellent new freshman class, two new professors, Dean Neilson has a full year behind him, and a new Finance Director. We are underway, making way, with all sails full and on a great course and speed.

Our Orientation Week that we formalized several years ago continues to prove very helpful for the new students and parents.  Looking back, it must have been tough to have a packed two day orientation and go to class on Monday. Even the upperclassmen like it because they also get a chance to reacquaint and have a little fun with their friends before buckling down.again. I believe it helps retention in the first year which is very healthy for Webb.

Please come and visit sometime this year if you haven't been back in a while. I think you'll like what you find.

Now that classes have finally started, the sounds of learning are resonating again throughout the historic halls of Webb Institute.  As we follow in the footsteps of the giants who once walked these halls, we have dutifully returned to a perpetual state of sleeplessness by sacrificing our own comfort to spend hours pondering the texts of naval architecture.  more...

Orientation Week the Freshman Perspective

By Zach Backas '16

Class of 2016 - Freshman

My freshman orientation week was an absolute whirlwind of activity. I got my first tastes of the exhaustion and excitement in a typical Webb day after the trips to New York and Six Flags and, especially, Dean Emeritus Compton's drawing class. My class and I were kept busy with the packed orientation schedule, and the scarcity of free time placed an immediate value upon it. In the few unencumbered moments we had, I strove to recognize my newfound situation. more...
