Commencement at Webb
"Cast off, set sail and bon voyage..."
Webb Institute hosted its 116th commencement exercise on Saturday, June 16 overlooking the Long Island Sound. Twenty worthy young adults from the Class of 2012 were granted bachelor of science degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering, and Dr. Stephen M. Payne returned to Webb to deliver the commencement address. During his speech Dr. Payne, chief designer of the Queen Mary 2, told the graduates that their degrees will be held in very high regard and that they should not be "put off by setbacks. Go back to the drawing board and think about how you can make things better." He ended by saying, "Cast off, set sail and bon voyage [but] most of all: Enjoy your career to the fullest." Webb 2012's Circumnavigation of a Nation
By Kyle R. Manis '12

As the final days of the semester drew near, the senior class busied themselves with planning for their futures. Career plans, moving plans, and graduate school plans all swirl in the air, but one group of seniors finds itself with a different plan to worry about.
On the Tuesday following graduation, eight seniors boarded a recreational vehicle bound for adventure. These students had committed their first month of freedom to visiting all of their classmates' homes, along with a few other stops along the way. This trip will cover some 10,000 miles and will circumnavigate the contiguous 48 states. more...

Fair Winds and Following Seas...
The Webb Institute Community wishes both Ms. Carol McLaughlin and Professor John F. Hennings Fair Winds and Following Seas in their new endeavors and thanks them for their commitment to Webb.

On June 11, the Webb family gathered to thank Ms. Carol McLaughlin for her six years of service in the Development Office. She joined the Webb staff in 2006, working part time as the Capital Campaign Assistant. Ms. McLaughlin's talents quickly became apparent and she transitioned into a full time position as the Assistant Director of Annual Giving Stewardship and Research.
Two days later, the Webb family assembled again, this time to wish Professor John F. Hennings good luck in his new endeavors and to thank him for 22 years of service. This award-winning educator, veteran, mentor and friend retired from Webb Institute this June. In addition to running the electrical engineering program at Webb, he has also taught physics, statics and dynamics.
