Alumni Spotlight: Michael Klein-Urena '11
Shortly after graduating from Webb one very happy day last June, I joined a new, green shipping company. It was so new, in fact, that it didn't even have an official name. That came two weeks later, when we filed the incorporation papers for SanSail, Inc. |

Meet the Winter Work Bloggers

While other colleges were taking a long winter's nap, Webb students were gaining valuable experience in the real world. It's called "Winter Work," and it happens every January and February for every student. Freshmen work alongside ship fitters and welders in shipyards. Sophomores plow the oceans, realizing that crews will have to live and work on their future designs. Juniors and seniors network and apply themselves in design offices. Like the martime industry, our Winter Work experience is global with more and more students finding themselves overseas with jobs in countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.

Prof. Richard Harris Presents Webb to the Nassau County Historical Society

On Sunday, January 29, 2012, an audience of over a hundred visited the Webb campus to hear a presentation by Professor Richard Harris on William Webb, sponsored by the Nassau County Historical Society. Professor Harris's talk focused on the extraordinary life of William Webb and on the qualities and values he demonstrated as shipbuilder, businessman, public servant, and philanthropist. The presentation included a number of illustrations describing the historical context in which Mr. Webb lived and worked, and depicting some of the ships he designed and built. |

Alumni Regional Events

Last fall, the Webb Alumni Association and Trustees hosted a series of social events in 10 cities across the country. These regional gatherings reached over a quarter of our alumni, allowing everyone to engage in a discussion about the current state of Webb and our plans for the future. Keith Michel, Dean Neilson, and President Olsen attended most of the events and fielded questions from the alumni, parents, and friends of Webb.
This winter, our alumni reached out to Webb students during Winter Work by hosting special events that encouraged Webbies young and old to get together to talk about Webb life, Winter Work, and life after Webb.
Building on the success of our 2011 Alumni and Winter Work Gatherings, expect to see even more alumni events in 2012. You can find pictures and recaps from past events and announcements for upcoming events on the Webb Alumni Regional Events Section. |

Webb Alumni Fund Update
By John Malone '71, Webb Alumni Fund Chairman
As of February 10, the 2011-12 Webb Alumni Fund (WAF) stands at $496,378, up 2.3% over the same time last year. The average gift is up 16.5% over last year, and the median gift is up 16.7%. The economy is showing signs of resurgence, and the 2011-12 WAF could be a banner year in moving Webb closer to long-term financial sustainability - but every alum must participate in a meaningful way if we are to succeed. If you haven't yet made your 2011-12 contribution to the Webb Alumni Fund (WAF), now is the time to do it - and it's as easy as clicking here. For more information about the Webb Alumni Fund... |
