Some Webbies have been known to get into fishy business but Whitman has gone too far. Marcin Whitman '81 started his professional career as a typical Webbie, working for a design firm: Earl & Wright of San Francisco on such issues as stability and wave spectrum analysis for semi-submersibles, jack-ups and tension leg platforms. 
Webb is pleased to announce Roger I. Basu as our newest professor. Dr. Basu is a structural engineer with over thirty years of experience. His early experience was in the structural design and analysis of offshore structures, bridges and buildings. For the last twenty years his focus has been exclusively on ship and offshore structures. 
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers recognized two members of the Webb Family at its Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas. 
Dean Compton and Professor Hadler held the Shirley N. & Stephen R. Towne Professor of Ship Design Chair and the James J. Henry Professor of Naval Architecture Chair, respectively. The faculty committee unanimously chose Professor Neil Gallagher as the second Towne Chair of Ship Design and Professor Richard Royce as the second J.J. Henry Chair of Naval Architecture. 
In October, the Freshman Class had their first opportunity to see a dry-docked vessel as part of our Naval Architecture 1 course. The trip was organized by Dean Neilson, and along with Professor Werner, we packed into our vans and headed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. For some of us, the Horizon Lines vessel Discovery was the first large ship we had ever seen.
