Alumni Spotlight: Abbott Weiss '63

Abbott Weiss '63August, 1959: Eisenhower was President, Hawaii formally became the 50th state, and I entered Webb with 23 other young men as a freshman. Ike is long gone, Hawaii is still here, and I still feel most fortunate to be a Webbie.

Although I didn't always feel so positive at the time, my Webb experience has been significant and beneficial ever since. The heavy workload and high standards (plus the fear of flunking out and losing the scholarship) taught me how to work harder than ever in my life - and I learned about reserve capacities I never knew I had. (For example, earning a Master's degree at MIT and a doctorate at Harvard were easy by comparison.) more...

Gifts that Support Webb Operations

We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the donors who supported Webb's last capital campaign. Your generosity made Webb's Emergency Generator possible. Never have the benefits of that gift been felt so acutely as recently when the remnants of Hurricane Irene struck. Our neighbors on the Sound were without electricity for days, whereas Webb and our students didn't miss a beat, nor did they miss any classes! It was business as usual with no disruptions in our electrical service, thanks to you. Another example of a gift that keeps on giving - thank you!

Webb's Parent Annual Fund effort kicked off on Saturday, September 17th during Family Weekend. The group of parent volunteers, led by Alison and Hal Granger P'14, was greeted by Webb's President Olsen, and spent the morning writing letters of appeal to fellow parents. The parents' goals this year are for 100% parent participation and a dollar amount of $100,000. Thank you to all the parent volunteers for their efforts on behalf of Webb. If you wish to be involved as a volunteer, please contact Alison or Hal Granger or Carol McLaughlin at cmclaughlin@webb-institute.edu

Webb Announces Inaugural Zeien Scholar

Eric HarrisDr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Zeien have established the "Dr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Zeien '52 Student Scholar" through a one million dollar endowment. The income from this generous gift will offset the cost of tuition for one Webb student in perpetuity. The selected student will be a rising sophomore and retain the honor of the title of Zeien Scholar throughout their Webb career. Upon their graduation, another Zeien Scholar will be chosen. This is the second one million dollar endowment received from the Zeien family, the income from the first providing support for the highly successful Zeien Lecture series.

The Webb faculty was asked to establish the criteria for the Zeien Scholar. In addition to academic excellence, the faculty insisted that the candidate uphold the principles upon which Mr. Webb founded the Institute in manner and deed, thereby contributing to the overall excellence of the school. more...

Webb Welcomes the Class of 2015!

Mid-August saw the arrival of the 26 freshmen who comprise the class of 2015.

From August 15 - 21, the freshmen quickly got to know one another - and the practice of free-hand drawing - during what has become Orientation to Webb. The drawing course, taught by newly "retired" Dean Emeritus Roger Compton, and aided by Nathan Hagan '12, and Dean Neilson, provides a relaxed opportunity for the class members to get to know each other as well as learn about Webb life and history. more...
