Alumni Spotlight: Lincoln Evans-Beauchamp '92

Alumni SpotlightWebb is its own rite of passage, one that binds all Webbies together in shared experiences. The intensity of its academic workload stretched over four years teaches discipline, determination, a strong work ethic, and passion. The depth of the educational experience - an internalization of the core principles of engineering - teaches confidence, creativity, and open-mindedness, attributes usually associated with entrepreneurs. The only part that is missing is that spark of competitiveness and initiative that comes from wanting to see your idea grow to into a successful company. more...

The Dean's Vision...

By Richard P. Neilson

Dean NeilsonIt is my honor to address you as the new Dean. Many of you know me as a classmate, fellow student, professor or industry colleague. I've been asked to discuss my vision of the next few years.

First, we have an extremely sound foundation from which to work. Roger Compton and the faculty have developed a solid curriculum responsive to our students' and the industry's needs. I look forward to the opportunity to continue that process, holding firmly to the principles upon which Webb was established while assuring our graduates are well prepared for the future. We will change things as conditions warrant. Mr. Webb founded the Institute with his eyes focused on the future. We will do the same. To that end, we will be looking to our Industry Advisory Group to provide input on development trends in the maritime world, including offshore technology, alternative energy sources and environmental issues. more...

Advance Ship Testing Facilities (ONR Grant)

Flow ChannelThe summer of 2011 has been exciting on the Webb campus. Four testing facilities projects are well underway. The sill of the tank was raised by five inches, allowing testing of larger waves using the new eight-paddle wave-maker. Professor Royce and technician Pat Doherty, completed a set of regular wave seakeeping tests relating to bulbous bows on luxury yachts using the new wave-maker at the beginning of the summer. Another project in Robinson Model Basin is the addition of a viewing window in the east side of the tank. The recessed viewing pit has been poured in preparation for the window installation during winter work. more...
