Still Doodling Ships
By Drew DeSpirito '03
I started doodling ships in my notebooks in elementary school when I was six, and kept it up all the way into high school. Once I found out there was a tuition-free college a few towns over that offered naval architecture, I knew I had to attend. I learned to be careful what I wished for. If I stop and think about the multiple all-nighters and the endless barrage of assignments, papers, and projects, I shudder. Then my mind moves past the initial horror and remembers all the fun we had while pulling those all-nighters. Some of my classmates remain my closest friends, and we always reminisce about the laughing and fun-not the work! more...

Women at Webb
By Katie Whalen '11
Engineering historically has been a male-dominated field. The Society of Women Engineers estimates 20% of all engineers are female - and Webb's numbers are reflective of this percentage. While the stats show my fellow female classmates and I are a minority at Webb, it certainly hasn't been a hindrance to our Webb career. more...

We're Number Four!
Webb Institute named one of CNNMoney.com's "12 Great Bargain Colleges"
Webb Institute shows up fourth on CNNMoney.com's posting of "12 Great Bargain Colleges." Culled from The Best 373 Colleges by The Princeton Review, all the institutions posted by money.cnn.com on November 10 charge tuition and fees under $20,000, and the first four are noted as completely tuition-free. As the header paragraph notes, "College costs are soaring, but you can still get quality educations without breaking the bank."
The article on Webb notes that students need to be focused and to study hard - features of which all alumni and students are well aware. Other points noted were the accessibility of the professors, 100% job placement for graduates, and the beautiful Long Island Sound setting.
Only two other engineering-based colleges are included in the top twelve bargains - The Cooper Union (also tuition-free) and Tuskegee University ($16,750 per year).
As noted in January 2010, The Princeton Review selected its "Best Value" choices for 2010 based on surveys of administrators and students at more than 650 public and private colleges and universities. The selection criteria covered more than 30 factors in three areas: academics, costs of attendance, and financial aid, using the most recently reported data from each institution for its 2008-09 academic year. |

Webb Basketball - Fall 2010
By Ryan Pfeifer (Captain 2011)
The Webb Institute Basketball team finished with a record of 1-7 this season, a record that doesn't reflect the competitiveness and hard work shown by the team this year. The team started strong, beating Sarah Lawrence College in the first game of the season by 23 points. The next game played resulted in a rough loss to a higher division team, Vaughn College, but it was taken as an opportunity to challenge ourselves and prepare for the upcoming games. more... |
