Hall of Fame for Herreshoff Halsey Herreshoff '55 inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame
President Olsen attended the 17th America's Cup Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, September 18th at the New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court facility in Newport, RI. One of the honorees was Halsey Herreshoff '55 of Bristol, RI - and after his acceptance speech all 600-plus attendees gave him a standing ovation. It's easy to see why: Distinguished as the most active America's Cup sailor during the 12 Metre era, Halsey Herreshoff served as bowman, crew boss, or navigator in six campaigns, and sailed in four America's Cup matches. A naval architect and marine engineer, Halsey has contributed to the support of technology and management of many campaigns. more |
Student Spotlight: Brent J. Morrison '11 Perseverance to protect a tradition
When Brent Morrison '11 proposed his thesis last spring, he faced a roadblock. He wanted to study the small commercial fishing vessels built in his native Pacific Northwest in the 1970s and '80s, but very few drawings remained. He hoped to find an idle boat to measure over summer break, but his chances were slim: The entire fleet traditionally spends June through September in Alaska. Unfortunately for the skipper and crew - but fortunately for Brent - one boat was delayed with engine trouble. Gathering up his friends, his family, the crew of the boat, and a few concrete blocks for good measure, Brent conducted an inclining experiment on the delayed vessel. more |
Family Weekend September 24-26, 2010
Close to 130 family members attended this year's Family Weekend, which kicked off Friday night with an Ice Cream Social. Saturday's events included President Olsen's update on the Institute, and a delightful barbecue lunch. A well-attended highlight of the weekend was the dedication of the new Model Cutter in the Carpenter Shop. Tom Sartor's '54 family and friends donated the money that paid for the Model Cutter, and the Class of 1988 gave gifts in memory of Marty Johnson '88 that paid for the installation and other related expenses for the Model Cutter. more |
Faculty Spotlight: Elena Goloubeva Professor of Mathematics
This is my fourth year at Webb, and as time goes by I learn more about the Institute's needs and spirit, and I get more involved in many aspects of Webb's life unrelated to math. I enjoy my role as Monday Lecture Coordinator, and as the Secretary for faculty meetings. I like Webb students: Each class at Webb is different; they are challenging me, and I am challenging them. It is a tremendous joy and responsibility to know that every brick that I am using to build up the mathematical knowledge and freedom in analytical thinking of my students may be used in future in their engineering classes. more |
WANTED: Winter Work Term January and February, 2011
It is that time of year when the Webb students are starting to plan where they will spend their Winter Work term. The freshmen will be heading out to shipyards, the sophomores will spend their time onboard ships, and the juniors and seniors will look for work in engineering offices in the United States and abroad. If you have any internship(s) in your offices for January and February, please contact Josie Wilson by email at jwilson@webb-institute.edu or by telephone 516-671-2213 Ext. 108 and she will get the word out to the students. Josie will be contacting shipyards and shipping companies in the next few weeks for the freshmen and sophomores. If you are working in a yard that you believe will have a very interesting experience to introduce to the freshmen, please contact Josie. We are also always on the lookout for new seafaring adventures for our students and welcome any berths aboard ships that will fulfill the sophomore sea term requirements. In addition, if you can offer housing in your area for those students who will be looking for rooms or apartments, please let us know and we will pass the word. |
