Webb Welcomes The Class of 2014!

Orientation Week 2010This past August, Webb Institute welcomed 19 new freshman students into the student body.  The Class of 2014 arrived on Monday, August 16th with family members and friends.  As they bid farewell to their loved ones, these freshmen quickly discovered that they were already members of another family - the Webb family.

Many of the members of this class have expressed their gratitude and enjoyment over their college experience thus far.  John Carlson '14 articulated his excitement in the class's first writing assignment; "Although it has been less than fourteen days since I unpacked my bags and began my shipbuilding education, I feel like I have lived here for months.  I have found myself completely immersed in the new lifestyle here, and I have loved every second of it."  Whether it was a Scavenger Hunt in New York City, teamwork exercises with the upperclassmen, a relaxing day at Jones Beach, or a drawing class with Dean Compton, it was clear that the Class of 2014 had settled in to their new home, and they were here to stay. more
New Year, New Paths to Success
Student Organization Leaders Learn Skill Sets That Will Benefit Everyone At Webb

Leadership Week 2010What does it take to succeed as a leader? Thirteen Student Organization officers found out when they returned to Webb a week before the official start of the new academic year to work together in Webb's leadership training week.

The program featured discussions on leadership styles and types, self-knowledge through the Meyers-Briggs inventory, and presentations by outside speakers, including "How to Run a Meeting," presented by George Munkenbeck, father of Alma Jacobson (Munkenbeck) '01and Kate Munkenbeck '04.  Mr. Robert Albright, who is helping Webb integrate leadership components into the core program and Winter Work term, presented interactive workshops on "Working in Teams".  more
Me, Myself, And TRI
By Porter Bratten '08

PorterIt seemed like yesterday; sophomore year at Webb, and Bobby Kleinschmit says to me: "Portez! Let's do a triathlon!"  I was unaware of the endurance sports junkie inside me about to be unleashed, and consented.  Training ensued, and let me tell you, the stimulus and response model works.  Triathlon awoke inside me a competitive bloke I never dreamed existed.  In the ensuing years, triathlon grew to be an anchor and mainstay in my life.

Today, I see triathlon from three angles: competitor, coach, and race director.  I've competed in 30 races, including two Ironmans.  I've founded races on opposite coasts of the country, and I coach folks who, like me, accumulate more miles on bicycles than automobiles.  Add engineering, and I feel my perspective is unique. Engineering enables the mind to manipulate the world to overcome limitations imposed by nature (floating steel?); triathlon enables the body to overcome the limitations imposed by the mind.  more
Summer at SAIC
By Zachary J. Harris '11

saic 2This summer, I worked for SAIC's Maritime System Solutions Division in Lynnwood, WA.  This was my third internship with the office, and each internship proved to be more exciting than the last.

SAIC recently purchased a new Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), and I was asked to analyze the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) data.  The FAT had just been conducted the last week of June, and I was the first to take a detailed look at the data.  This was terribly exciting, because the vehicle design had never been tested at sea before.  The vendor had engineering data and had run vehicle simulation, but nobody really knew how she would behave in the field; because an underwater vehicle is out of sight for most of the test, it is difficult to evaluate her performance from the deployment craft.  I was given the opportunity to understand and characterize the vehicle's behavior (path, heading, pitch, roll, etc) before anybody else knew what had happened, including the people present at the test.  more

Webb Students Garner Top Scholarships

ScholarshipsThe Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has awarded its two top undergraduate scholarships to Webb seniors for the fall of their senior year.

Ryan Pfeifer was awarded the Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt Undergraduate Scholarship, and Christopher Rose received the Robert N. Herbert Undergraduate Scholarship.

In addition, both of these young men were awarded scholarships from the American Society of Naval Engineers along with classmates David Donatelli and Zachary Harris.

Mr. Pfeifer and Mr. Harris also received scholarship funds from the Marine Technical Society.  The Society also gave scholarships to Kyle Manis, "12, and Donald Rickerson, '13.

Nathan Hagan '12  has become the first Webb student to receive the government funded SMART scholarship, a full scholarship to support engineering students willing to go to work for a government agency, in this case NAVSEA, for a period of time equal to the years of scholarship support.  All Webb students, by virtue of this program are eligible to apply for this scholarship which includes full-tuition, room, board, books and personal expenses.
