Webb's First Sabbatical Draws To A Close
Professor George Petrie Returns from China

George Petrie SabbaticalProfessor George Petrie is returning from a one-semester sabbatical leave, having spent the past half-year living in mainland China. During that time, he visited several shipyards in the Shanghai, Dalian and Yantai areas of the country; and attended many conferences and exhibitions, spreading the word about Webb to all who would listen. A special word of thanks goes to ABS for facilitating the shipyard visits, and to their many surveyors who gave generously of their time to act as hosts and tour guides. Along the way, Professor Petrie spent some time with Webb alums Matt Fox ('04) and Kristin Jarecki ('08), both of whom are working for ABS as ship surveyors in the Shanghai area. more

Class Of '70 Keeps on Truckin'
By David Bovet, Class Agent, '70

Class of 1970Homecoming 2010 was a great event for our class.  We are proud to report that the Class of '70, duly anointed by one of Webb's greatest professors as "The Worst Class in 40 years," has now doubled that record: Yes, we doubt that any class has worsted us (or knitted us?) since we graduated so long ago.

In honor of our 40-year long escape from the Webbisphere, we did want to offer a suitable gift to the Institute.  Eric Linsner took the lead in researching appropriate gifts and making the first contribution.  Gradually the fever spread across the class - in the end we had 100% participation in making a special 40th reunion gift.  There is now a blue pickup truck on campus bearing the proud logo, "Gift of the Class of 1970." more

ACCeSS Funding
Atlantic Center for Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships (ACCeSS) Funding Continues for Five More Years

ONRIn April, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) approved funding for a five-year continuation of the Atlantic Center for Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships (ACCeSS) totaling $4.5 million. ACCeSS is a consortium of academic institutions and industry partners that works closely with ONR Program Manager Kelly Cooper. Consortium partners include: Florida Atlantic University, the Naval Postgraduate School, Stevens Institute of Technology, United States Naval Academy, University College London; Lockheed Martin, AMSEC LLC, and VT Shipbuilding.

Under the guidance of Professor Richard Royce, Webb students have actively participated in ACCeSS related research since 2004. Generally, students work on ACCeSS projects during either winter work or senior thesis. Students participate in periodic reviews and give presentations on their research efforts. This award is intended to fund research related to unmanned surface vessels, trimaran performance, and educational exchange. ACCeSS has been extremely successful in fostering collaboration between member institutions. Specifically, Professor Royce has performed research at UCL and participated on PhD dissertations at Stevens Institute. Webb's portion of the funding will total $372,000 over the five-year period.

The Class of 2014

Class of 2014 OrientationThey come from as far away as Japan, Washington State and Kansas. Seventy percent of them have musical talent, 85 percent of them played more than one sport in high school, and 100 percent of them think Webb will prepare them exceptionally well for their futures. Who are they? They are the fall incoming Freshman Class of 2014, 15 men and four women whose academic record and campus interview have resulted in their full-scholarship to Webb. This new group of bright young men and women arrive on Monday, August 16th. See accounts of their first week of activities at our home page www.webb-institute.edu
Memories of O.D. Duty
Matt Tedesco '91

Memories of O.D. DutyA lot has changed at Webb since I graduated.  One notable change is that there are no longer phone booths on the main floor of Stevenson Taylor Hall.  When I was a student, there were no cell phones or email, and the only way that the outside world could communicate with students was via these phone booths.

As is still the practice today, freshmen were assigned the job of being Officers of the Day, or "ODs."  Among other duties, it was the OD's job to seek out students when they received a call at one of the phone booths.  It was a brilliant system.  Freshmen had the least familiarity with the campus, and the least familiarity with the student body.  It was a great way to familiarize new students with the student body and the campus, albeit at the expense of those callers who had to wait patiently until the student being called was located and made his or her way to the phone booth.  more
Webb Parents Association
Keith Dixon P'11, WPA Chairman

The Webb Parents Association (WPA) is looking forward to the coming school year and would like to take this opportunity to welcome the students of the incoming Class of 2014, their parents and families!

Organized in 2008, the WPA's mission is "to promote participation of parents and families to enrich the Webb experience through communication and support in keeping with the institution's traditions, goals and standards of excellence."  Currently, the organization is working to raise needed funds to renovate the freshman dining room. New lighting, an exterior door and wood paneled wainscoting are planned, to replicate the main dining hall and enhance the freshmen dining experience.

Parents new to Webb are invited to learn more about the school and the WPA by visiting the WPA Yahoo group site,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Webb_Institute, which includes WPA meeting minutes and by-laws, photos, a discussion board, and information about the school and the surrounding community, and Winter Work. Currently the site has 88 members, and all parents are encouraged to join.

Membership in the Webb Parents Association is open to parents, guardians and families of all current students and graduates. There is no fee, form or application for membership. The next meeting of the WPA will be held during Family Weekend on Saturday, September 25 in the Henry Auditorium. All parents are invited to attend. Become involved with the WPA today by joining the Yahoo listserve for up-to-the-minute messages and information about the organization's activities.

Save the date!

Dean Roger H. Compton ('61, PG'64) and Professor Jacques B. Hadler (Hon.'93) will be retiring from the Webb faculty at the end of this academic year.  To honor their many years of service to Webb and the entire marine industry, a retirement celebration is being planned for the evening of Friday, May 20, 2011.

You are invited to be part of this very important celebration, so please mark your calendar.   We will post further information on www.webb-institute.edu as the event planning is completed.  We look forward to seeing you there.

For any additional information please contact Professor Matthew Werner via email at mwerner@webb-institute.edu
