Founder's Day Celebration Honoring William H. Webb
Eleven years ago, a tradition that is now a fixture at Webb Institute was born. The faces of its participants may change each year, but the enthusiasm and dedication of all involved remain stronger than ever. Founder's Day 2010, celebrated April 9th, was a day of unity and appreciation as faculty and students honored our founder, William H. Webb, by putting our pencils down, rolling our sleeves up, and giving back to our school.
With Friday's afternoon classes cancelled, students and faculty met on Main Deck at 1300 to kick off the festivities as Webb's S.O. President, Doug Slocum, read off the project assignments. After a school-wide "Webb on 3!" around the fountain, the groups went off to work. This year's campus improvements, to name a few, included installing a windscreen around the Webb tennis courts; painting a mural in Motley Hall; planting flowers; repainting the floor of Haeberle Lab, the student garage, and the tank recreation room; and the always needed attic clean-out and beach cleanup. more

Professor Receives IEEE Award Excellence in Electrical Engineering & Technology Education
On April 8, 2010, John Hennings, Professor of Electrical Engineering, received the IEEE's (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Long Island Section's award for Excellence in Electrical Engineering and Technology Education. The Athanasios Papoulis award is given annually to an educator either living or working within Nassau or Suffolk counties; Professor Hennings was nominated for this award by the Webb Student Chapter of IEEE, which was formed in 2009 under the leadership of students Jacob Genauer, Simmy Willemann, and Don Rickerson. The citation on the award reads "For Innovative Teaching of Electrical Engineering and Dedication to Student Development," and a number of students and administration were present to see the award ceremony. more |
Webb Seniors Headed To The Netherlands By Peter Lee '10 & Jay Nonemaker '10
It's official: Barring any unforeseen thesis catastrophes we will be attending graduate school at TU Delft in the Netherlands beginning in next year. Ranked the 17th best university in the world for engineering and technology by Times Higher Education in 2008, TU Delft tries to make the transition process into Dutch culture as smooth as possible for international students by hosting a week-long orientation which will include class registration, tours of the campus and the city, day trips to other parts of the Netherlands, and parties. Events are also hosted throughout the year specifically for the international students. more |
Sailing Team News News, Regattas & Upcoming Events
There has been a lot going on for the Sailing Team recently; read about the highlights below! New York Yacht Club Visit On Thursday, April 9, eleven members of the Webb Sailing Team and their coach took part in an evening at the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) in Manhattan. Trustee/Alum Greg Matzat ('89), was kind enough to offer the team the opportunity to see the historic club, tour the model room and library, and enjoy dinner and drinks. One of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs in the country, the NYYC was founded in 1844 and has been at its current location since 1901. One of the club's greatest features is the Model Room-a room of extravagant architecture that's home to 151 full rigged and 1200 half models which overwhelm "even the most frequent visitor." As such, it should be clear that the effect on the dozen young sailor/naval architects was immense. The team wandered slowly around the room, wondering at the incredible beauty and vast history of the items within. more |

Naval Engineering Education Consortium(NEEC)
Webb recently received news that the Navy has approved the formation of the Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC). The purpose of the program is to increase the number of graduates from across academia prepared for careers in naval engineering in order to meet the civilian workforce needs of the Navy. The approval of the program includes a five and a half year funding commitment to support the NEEC starting in April 2010. Webb is one of the core members of the program along with the University of Michigan, Virginia Tech, MIT, Penn State, and Georgia Tech. Webb is primarily tasked with providing educational programs and services to NEEC member educational institutions, student program participants, and practicing naval engineers. Webb's educational offerings will be in the form of both distance learning and intersessional residence programs. As part of the NEEC, Webb students will be encouraged to apply for SMART scholarships that will pay Webb's full tuition for each student who is awarded a scholarship and will allow Webb to participate in Navy sponsored student research projects that can provide additional funding. more |
