Phonathon - The Phone Lines Were On Fire!
Freshman volunteer callers raise over $111,000!
Phonathon
Each year the freshman class calls Webb alumni and friends to raise money for the Webb Alumni Fund (WAF). Typically they raise more than they had the prior year by a few percentage points. Last year the freshmen received pledges totaling $63,000 for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Over this year's two-night Phonathon, held on March 23rd and 25th , twenty freshman callers made 450 calls and 137 generous individuals pledged over $111,000 - an amazing 76% increase over the previous year. Most encouraging is that the vast majority of donors increased their gifts over last year. The student callers were broken into four groups of two shifts each night. The high fundraisers in each of the groups were: Justin Van Emmerik, Gerardo Nixon, Colin Spillane, and David Eddy. more

The Flaming Final by John Costello '89

Got a good story from when you were at Webb? Submit your favorite tale to Gailmarie Sujecki at gsujecki@webb-institute.edu for possible inclusion in future issues of the WebbiENews. The following story is from John Costello '89.

Throughout my time at Webb, there were many things my classmates and I tried in order to achieve good, or just passing, grades. None of these things involved studying more; that would have been absurd. One of the more memorable things we tried was the infamous "Abe Lincoln Study Candle". more

Engineering a Greener Future
By Mike Cariello'10 & Dusty Rybovich'10

Senior_Thesis
It is our responsibility as engineers to design a better world. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)-carrying behemoths belch greenhouse gases across the planet, while consuming the world's limited supply of prized and precious oil. Traditional marine diesel propulsion is ultimately an inefficient generator of electrical power - and also creates harmful emissions. We have designed an alternate propulsion plant that uses fuel cells instead of engines, and makes excellent use of the boil-off gas that naturally occurs aboard LNG carriers.

Fuel cells have been studied for centuries, but their complex nature has discouraged in-depth research until recently. Our concept plant uses a type of fuel cell already being manufactured commercially in the United States; one that is fully capable of being used at sea with LNG fuel. more

Two Wins in a Row
Webb Tennis
The Webb tennis team won two matches in a row with solid victories against Sarah Lawrence College and St. Joseph's College. This evens out Webb's divisional record in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) to 2 - 2. What was even more impressive were the double wins in the top two single slots from #1 Michael Cheng '12 and #2 Sean Doran '12. Quite an accomplishment when you consider they are facing the most talented players that much larger schools have to offer! Michael's 11 - 9 thriller on center court at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Queens, kept all of the spectators glued to their chairs and their heads going back and forth for an hour and a half! more
Winter Work Term
By Jenna Ferrieri '11
Winter_Work
This winter I worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, New Hampshire. My project while employed by CRREL was to complete an assessment of CRREL's capabilities of ship model testing in ice, and the future markets the facility should pursue in order to carry out such studies. I also investigated the current state of the United States in the Arctic and speculated on the future role of the US and other Arctic nations in these northern oceans. Through my research, however, I found that the US is falling behind in its ability to maintain a presence in the Polar Regions and is not in a state to compete with the other Arctic nations. more

This spring the Webb program and Webb students have generated press stories that have appeared across the U.S.

On Long Island, Webb was celebrated in Newsday, with an anniversary piece on the historical move of Webb Institute from the Bronx to its "new home" on the property of the former Herbert Pratt estate. While on local T.V. one of our incoming students, Samantha Griswold, was celebrated as a News Twelve Long Island Scholar Athlete. more
