Students Help With Relief Effort in Haiti
Haiti ReliefOn January 12th, an earthquake struck the small country of Haiti. The U.S. Geological Survey said that this quake was centered about 35 miles west-southwest of Port-au-Prince and 6.2 miles below the surface. The magnitude-7 quake has left the country in shambles; an estimated 1.5 million people are now homeless, and countless others are injured.

The U.S. Navy has responded quickly, sending relief in the form of food, water, and medical aid. Several vessels have been instructed to change their current courses and head down to Haiti to provide aid. Because our sophomore students are asked to spend their winter months at sea, five Webbies are getting the chance to be a part of the relief effort in Haiti. more
Winter Work
Greetings from Student Blogs
Two of our more far-flung upperclassmen are sharing their experiences through blogs available here and through the Webb Institute homepage.

San Diego Winter Work Students Enjoy an Evening at the Malones

Winter Work MalonesOn February 4th, Amy and John Malone '71 continued their annual tradition of inviting the Webb winter work students in the San Diego area to their home for an evening of good food, fellowship and relaxation. The students were Michael Cariello '10, Justin Van Emmerik '13 and Dave Donatelli '11 (all at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego), and Dave Gross '10 (at Morrelli & Melvin in Huntington Beach).

At the start of the evening the students described their work term assignments. Michael and Dave are in NASSCO's Initial Design & Naval Architecture (IDNA) group, while Justin and his classmate Mike LaRose (who was unable to attend) are in NASSCO's Repair Department. Dave Gross is involved in the design and analysis of multi-hull yachts, including this year's America's Cup winner, USA.

The students were eager to see John's copy of the recently released 2009 Binnacle ... so much so that John brought out his collection of Binnacles and the students enjoyed comparing the look and feel of the Institute and its students over the course of the last 50+ years.

Student in the News...
Justin van EmmerikJustin van Emmerik hails from Severna Park, an unremarkable small town indistinguishable from any other small town in the unassuming state of Maryland. Justin is a member of the Freshman Class of 2013, and while he arrived at Webb initially uncertain if it was the right fit for him, he now jokes that "whoever could pull me out this place would be crowned the king of England." He is one of the two freshmen serving on the Student Court ("In my defense, I'm indifferent to internal proceedings and the student government, and I felt we were underrepresented," he claims) and plays Dalai and Volleyball to the best of his abilities, which he describes as "laughable." Justin spent a year abroad before attending Webb, volunteering and teaching English in parts of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, although he now says he is relieved to have found a place to settle down for a while. "Few kids have the chance to attend a school where they're truly satisfied with everything, from the coursework to the campus to the professors and the other students themselves," Justin says. "I happen to be one of the few."
