Webb Family Gathering in San Diego
Webb alumni, students, family members and corporate friends in Southern California enjoyed an evening with President Bob Olsen on January 13th at Tom Ham's Lighthouse in San Diego.
The reception provided an opportunity for alums to renew friendships, for students and parents to interact with local alums and some of the major employers in the area, and for President Olsen to get to know more alums on a personal basis - all while taking in the bay front view of the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge.
The 29 attendees enjoyed a terrific surf-and-turf buffet dinner (hosted by Webb trustee Jay Carson '73) that was accompanied by a slide show of campus photos. Trustee John Malone '71 served as emcee for the after-dinner program, which began with Jay Carson speaking of recent activities of the Trustees' Planning and Fine Arts Committees, and Joe Luckard giving an overview of employment opportunities in shipboard integration at General Atomics. more |

Winter Work Webb Students Working Across the USA and Around the World
The Webb students finished their fall semester and left campus on December 21 for the holidays. It was a short break for them, as on January 4 they all started their winter work jobs where they will spend the months of January and February - the freshman in shipyards, the sophomores aboard ships and the juniors and seniors in design offices. As the marine and all businesses increasingly become more international, twelve students are spending their work periods overseas with jobs in China, the Netherlands and South Africa.
While the students are away, the Webb campus is still full of activity. The administration, faculty and maintenance team are all busy working on plans for the spring semester starting March 1 and improving the campus.
A complete list of all the students' winter work jobs can be found here. more |
Student Spotlight Christopher Rose '11 Recounts His Semester Abroad in England
I was one of the first three students from Webb to spend a semester abroad in England. Upon arriving at the University of Southampton, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. The University of Southampton is a large university of 25,000 students, a huge contrast to Webb's 85. I was initially concerned that I would be an outsider in a completely foreign environment. But when I arrived at my residence hall, I was greeted by a smiling warden who showed me to my room and helped me carry my bags inside. After throwing my bags onto my bed, I wandered into the courtyard and found the JCR, an elected group of students that organized social functions for the various halls of residences. They were actively advertising events they had planned for "Fresher's Week." more |
Webb Alumni Fund Update Halfway into 2009-2010 Campaign Alumni Giving 24% More
Webb is working hard to reduce its draw on the endowment in order to ensure the long term success of the school. In addition to cost-cutting measures and searching for new sources of funding and gifts, increasing alumni contributions to the Webb Alumni Fund (WAF) is also vital. Over the last couple of years our alumni have shown how important Webb is to them by rising to the challenge and increasing their support. The 2009-2010 WAF goal is $1.1 million, and halfway through the campaign it looks like things are off to a promising start.
At the mid-point of the 2009-2010 campaign (as of December 31, 2009), 270 alums have contributed $391,000 including corporate matching gifts. Compare this to the mid-point of the previous year's annual campaign, when 239 alums had contributed $376,000 including matching gifts. more |
Livingston Library Receives Grant
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) of Philadelphia has awarded Webb Institute a grant in the form of a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Needs Assessment. Thanks are due to Jay Carson '73 for his efforts in preparing the grant application. CCAHA will send a conservator to appraise the condition of the library collections, historic objects and fine art; and to advise on matters of preservation, care, environmental and security issues. The collection of the Webb Archives includes lines drawings of Webb's ships, William Webb's correspondence, ships' logs and rare books. This assessment will aid us in planning for conservation of the collection and will be a supporting document in the seeking of other grants. more | |
