Why I Love Teaching Twists!
YC Teacher Portrait, by John Davie
Twists are the practice of spiraling the spine. They help us learn to create space between the vertebrae so that the discs are not compressed. Imagine a washcloth. As you wring it, it shortens. The same will happen to the spine unless a conscious effort is made to lengthen as you twist. The best way I know to ensure length in the spine, without having to work too hard, is by using the wall ropes. When I teach a twist class, I always like to use the wall ropes so that, as you hang on the ropes, you can let gravity add the necessary traction to the spine and torso, preparing it to lengthen in all twists.
As we traction and twist, we maximize the benefits of the twists. Tractioning the spine (creating space between the vertebrae) helps hydrate the discs and moves them back into place. Traction releases spasming muscles, and because it is usually done as an inversion, it is effortless. Twisting the spine also helps cleanse the intestines and loosen toxins that have settled in the body. On the energetic level, twists help induce mula bandha which helps contain the energy of the body, keeping us rooted in the present. Finally, twists help us see from a wider perspective, which helps the mind release old habits. I love doing twists, especially in the Spring, when it is time to clean out old ideas, toxins in the body, and get ready for Summer!
(John is teaching a traction and twist workshop on Sunday, April 18 from 1:00-4:00pm. Learn more>)

Introducing the Golden Lotus School
by Sandra Storwick and Marchella
Golden Lotus School Teachers
 | This May, a dream held in the hearts of many of us who practice Purna Yoga is coming true. A Purna Yoga school for children, Golden Lotus School, will be opening its doors. The school is created by Purna Yoga teachers and community members at the Juel Community Park House in Redmond.
Our dream was to create a school that would hold children in the feeling of the heart, the feeling of love and the wideness of possibilities. We wanted to provide an environment that would help children learn to center their minds and to live from their intuitive sense, something which is alive in younger children, but tends to diminish as the mind starts to develop with formal education. Our dream was to create a place where children could be educated but also guided to awaken the intelligence of the heart, so that the mind and the heart could work together as a team.
Beautiful setting at Juel Park
 | We believe that by awakening a child's inner wisdom, their wisdom can play a larger role in guiding them through their lives. We know, from our own practice of Purna Yoga, that by awakening the intelligence of the heart, and aligning the mind and the heart, one can live a more joyful, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
We offer classes during the day for home school students, after school, and on weekends - classes such as healthy cooking, wilderness awareness, German, art, and of course yoga and meditation!
