What to Do When You Don't Know

I once observed an instructor teaching advanced backbends to a class. One of the students came out of the pose quickly and said to the teacher, "I am having a pain right here. What do I do?" Because I had experienced that pain while doing the same backbend, I knew exactly what to press and what to extend to release the pain, so I expected a similar answer from the teacher. The teacher thought for a moment, and then in an authoritative voice gave an answer that actually Earth Candlemade the pain worse. Later on, when I asked the teacher why she had made that suggestion, she replied worriedly, "Well, I didn't know what to tell that student because I have not done that pose before, but it was prescribed as a part of this particular level of teaching, so I was teaching it. I had to tell her something, so I suggested what I thought might work." The ways of the world often encourage us to put on such deceptive displays rather than act with integrity.

I was once assessing a woman working toward her yoga teacher certification. When a student in her class asked a question about anatomy, the teacher replied, "I don't know. But I will find out and let you know." She spoke the truth rather than try to create an appearance and protect her ego. I gave the woman extra points because of her integrity, whereas other assessors marked her down for not knowing the answer. Another example of the ways of the world!
Surya Namaskar and Pregnancy

Q:  Should pregnant women do Surya Namaskar?

A:  In general, the Surya Namaskar series is not recommended during pregnancy, as this series creates too much heat in the body.  However, if a student is insistent on doing the series, modifications are essential.  To modify the series, use a chair and stay in each pose for several breaths. For example, Uttanasana may be Prenataldone by placing the forehead on the seat of the chair or on pads on the chair, and Vanarasana may be modified by putting the right leg back and the left leg to the left of the chair, resting her elbows on the chair.  Be sure to move slowly and gently throughout, and avoid the urge to accomplish anything.

 Mistakes

"A man should never be ashamed to own he has been wrong, which is but saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday."  -Alexander Pope

(At age twelve, the future poet drank infected milk and developed a hunchback.  He grew to be only four and a half feet tall, and suffered from headaches and asthma.  He translated Homer's epic poems into English.)

This quote reminds me that a mistake is always an Mistakeopportunity to learn and grow--as long as I continue to look at itin that light, and choose not to use my mistakes as an occasion to be ashamed.  As long as I am honest with myself, and take responsibility for my actions, I use my mistakes to help me grow.  It is no April Fool's joke, but this month, let us celebrate our mistakes-- seeing them as risks we take in order to grow!
The Purpose of The Now
Excerpt from Fire of Love  Aadil Palkhivala

Whatever my tasks, I must do them with joyous attention and loving care.  Nurturing children, being pleasant and competent at work, tending the body - all these are expressions of the dharma of the now.  Yes, I have made mistakes in the past, and I take full responsibility for their current consequences.  I embrace mistakes (though I do not invite them) because my soul learns from them.  We must take responsibility for all our choices that have led us to this moment, and act in the most noble way possible.
