JUNE 2012

Chamber Welcomes Bear Fest 2012!

Bear Fest Kick-Off & Unveiling Saturday, June 9th!

Easthampton City Arts+ kicks off Bear Fest 2012 with the Unveiling Celebration on Saturday, June 9 at the municipal parking lot on Cottage Street.  Mayor Michael Tautznik and State Representative John Scibak will speak at 2 p.m. to begin a full day of events ushering in the City's public art event that will continue through September.

After the opening remarks, the first of 40 bears will be unveiled, participants will have their first taste of Mount Tom Homemade Ice Cream's Official Bear Fest Ice Cream flavor and there will be a sidewalk parade to the Easthampton Savings Bank lawn where festivities will continue until 8 p.m. which will include food, music and fun for all ages!  Of course this is only the beginning of many events and activities that will occur over the next four months.  Visit the Bear Fest website at www.easthamptonbearfest.com for the list of events.

Bear Fest 2012 will provide many benefits for the business and arts community and arts education in Greater Easthampton.  If the success of the 2009 Bear Fest is any indication, we can expect an influx of visitors walking our streets and patronizing our restaurants, shops and galleries. Plus, when the Fest wraps up at the gala Auction of the Bears on September 20, arts programs in our schools will reap the benefits of the creations by local artisans and students who have worked so hard to bring life to the bears so creatively!

Invite your friends to visit Easthampton during  Bear Fest 2012 and experience all that Easthampton has to offer!

Member News:  Riverside Gardens Now in Bloom

Riverside gardens logo
Riverside Industries (RSI) held an open house for its new 1440 sq. ft. greenhouse on May 25 and 26, at their One Cottage Street location in Easthampton.

The greenhouse was built for $125,000 with help from fundraising efforts and a matching grant from the state Department of Developmental Services. Part of RSI's new program called Riverside Gardens, the greenhouse allows for year-round gardening, so clients of RSI can produce vegetables and flowers for sale and for use in RSI's restaurant. The greenhouse is also accessible, so that all clients who use a wheelchair or have other mobility needs are able to participate in the program.

RSI, Inc. exists to empower individuals with disabilities to become participating members of their communities, and working in the greenhouse is one way in which clients can acquire critical life skills.

Beginning June 1, these chemical-free vegetables, herbs and starter plants will also be sold at the Easthampton Farmer's Market in the City Hall parking lot at 50 Payson St., every Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M.
