Member News: E.L.F. Ball to Raise Funds for Students
The annual E.L.F. Ball is scheduled for March 3, 2012 at the Log Cabin Banquet and Meeting Hall, to benefit the Easthampton Learning Foundation. A black-tie optional event, the ball will feature dinner, dancing, and silent and live auctions.
The Easthampton Learning Foundation is a charitable organization that funds innovative, hands-on learning programs not funded by school budgets. The total cost of the ball is underwritten by its sponsors, so 100% of the funds collected go toward the endowment. Formed in 1999, E.L.F. is well on its way toward its goal of $1,000,000. In 2011, E.L.F. made nine grants totaling $15,000 to support learning programs in the Easthampton area. Grant applications for 2012 programs are due by June 30. There are several ways to help with the E.L.F. Ball: by becoming an event sponsor, by purchasing a ticket, or by donating or bidding on an auction item. E.L.F.'s president, Dick Perras of Finck and Perras Insurance Agency, said, "Come and join us for a fun evening and support education in our community." The ball is one of E.L.F.'s two major annual fundraisers; the second fundraiser is the Madeline E. Perras Memorial Golf Tournament, usually held in June. More Information about the E.L.F. Ball can be found at http://www.elfhelps.org/ , and the Easthampton Learning Foundation can be reached at 413-529-3354 or [email protected]. |
Member News: Art in the Orchard Wins Award Last summer's "Art in the Orchard," a sculpture exhibition on the grounds of Park Hill Orchard in Easthampton, earned a Gold Star Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in December, one of three awards given statewide in 2011. The Easthampton Cultural Council, which helped to fund the exhibit through a partial grant, nominated the exhibit for the award, which was given based on artistic quality, success in reaching out to underserved constituents, educational value, and ability to engage with the community. Jean-Pierre Pasche, owner of Eastmont Custom Framing, who coordinated the exhibit with Park Hill Orchard owners Alane Hartley and Russell Braen, said the Gold Star Award is just another example of how the project exceeded all his expectations. "We came into this not really knowing how it would unfold. I think we were all surprised by how successful Art in the Orchard has been, and this official recognition is great." Pasche, Braen, and Hartley, with the help of local sculptor Matt Johnson (whose work "Zag" is pictured here) and all the people of Park Hill Orchard, planned and staged this outdoor exhibition that included 22 sculptures from 16 local and regional artists. The event garnered between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors in total, greatly exceeding Jean-Pierre's expectations. "I think this beautiful setting also contributed to the popular success of the event." Pasche said he was inspired by a similar exhibition in Switzerland (his homeland) that has been running for over 20 years. He and the other organizers are thinking about recreating the sculpture trail in 2013, and possibly making it a biannual exhibition. More information about the exhibit and Park Hill Orchard can be found at http://www.parkhillorchard.com/art
