PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Friends,

Last month, I had the privilege of representing you at the AFP International's annual meeting for large chapters. The discussion was lively among the approximately 40 chapter presidents as we discussed membership, the 50th Anniversary, program content, the new website and advocacy.  While I was struck by how much we do in Dallas, there is more that we can do to move to the next level. Several chapters now offer programs tailored for the veteran fundraiser, while others are doing more to assist colleagues who may be in transition. Some have greater resources and engage in interesting service projects, or offer larger scholarships to encourage more CFREs or help people new to the profession receive valuable training. Some of these ideas were discussed at our own chapter's Board Retreat in early January and over the course of the next several months we will make progress towards implementing new initiatives to strengthen the Greater Dallas AFP and to give all of us an even greater reason to support our chapter.

I bet you are like me and don't use your membership to the maximum personal benefit. Last month when AFP's director of chapter services, Pat Bjorhovde, attended our January meeting, she asked for a show of hands of those who had used the AFP Resource Center.  Less than 50% had.  The information available on the website and from the library, free of charge, is just one of the many reasons why I value my annual investment. I have found invaluable handouts to use at board meetings, during solicitation calls or filling gaps in my own knowledge. If you have not recently taken a tour of the new AFP website, you will be pleasantly surprised by the ease of navigation and the scope of information. Also, you can now read Advancing Philanthropy in a digital format and download articles that are of particular interest.

The tragic earthquake in Haiti demonstrated once again the incredible generosity of our country.  Not even including the assistance provided by our government, the American people have contributed close to $560 million. And as has been widely reported, the American Red Cross received $30 million from individual donations of $10 made via text message in just two weeks.  In contrast, the organization raised $200,000 from texts during the 2008 hurricane season. AFP International and many chapters provided valuable information and support to local Haiti fundraising campaigns and relief efforts. We can certainly be proud of our profession for its efforts to help with this humanitarian crisis.

Finally, if you have not yet made your reservations for Baltimore, take a look at what this April's International Conference has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

See you soon,
