Supply & Demand of Philanthropy in the 21st Century:
Strategies for Fundraising & Financial Professionals

October 7-8, 2008
Save the Date!

The Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the AFP Massachusetts Chapter are pleased to offer a day-and-a-half conference at Boston College on October 7 and 8, 2008.

The conference is especially designed for wealth advisors, estate planners, fundraising professionals, directors of planned giving, vice presidents of development, and CEOs and board members of non-profit organizations.

This conference will explore the new dynamics of philanthropy-the meaning of philanthropy, charitable motivations, and supply-side changes among donors and clients across the spectrum of wealth.  In the new dynamics, donors desire rather than resist greater charitable involvement. They are entrepreneurial, view charities as an instrument to accomplish their aspirations, and make philanthropy a crucial part of their financial morality.  As to fundraising and financial professionals, donors increasingly expect them to help attain greater clarity and more to produce more fitting plans.

By understanding the implications of the new dynamics of philanthropy, fundraising and financial professionals can implement new strategies that will make their counsel more fulfilling for their clients and more rewarding for themselves.

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

I hope that you have had a great summer!  Nancy and I just returned from eleven days in Alaska, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, but like Dorothy, I believe that there is no place like home. As summer comes to a close, the season of fundraising is upon us.  The next four months hold many activities and opportunities for our organizations, and we will undoubtedly be very busy.  Please don't let the pressures of the season distract you from AFP.  We have some great educational opportunities planned, and wonderful events to share will colleagues.

I have been amazed at the attendance at our meetings recently.  Many have participated regularly in the opportunities available through AFP.  Despite the strong attendance, reality is that less than half of our members attend monthly meetings, and we have certainly missed some of you.  Several very familiar faces have been conspicuously absent.  I am optimistic that as summer ends, and our lives become a little more routine again, we might see you at AFP!  It's not too late to make your reservation for the workshop and luncheon with Tracy Gary on September 24th.  We will be looking for YOU!

See you there,

Best regards,
Larry E. Wickham, CFRE, President

NEWS OF NOTE

Mark your calendars! The date for the Greater Dallas Chapter annual Holiday Luncheon has been moved to Thursday, December 4, 2008. Our scheduled speaker will be Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.

Congratulations to Greater Dallas Chapter president Larry Wilkerson for earning his Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) designation.

Tanya Downing is the recipient of this year's John A. Davis Scholarship, which she will use to take part in the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program. Since its founding by President Eisenhower in 1956, People to People has developed high-level professional exchanges to encourage dialogue with counterparts in other nations.  Tanya will join a delegation of fundraising professionals traveling to China in December 2008. The delegation will create a greater awareness of the benefits and ethical practice in charitable fundraising and of the impact that this will have on the quality of life in the Peoples' Republic of China. The group will participate in an international professional and cultural program in Hong Kong and Beijing. The $1,000 John A. Davis Scholarship, awarded every other year, promotes the professional advancement of a high caliber, experienced development professional in the Dallas or Fort Worth chapter who adheres to the AFP Code of Ethics and wants to gain new or more in-depth knowledge in the field of fundraising.

AFP San Antonio invites you to its annual conference, January 22-23, 2009, at the San Antonio Marriott Hotel NW, 3233 NW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78213. Tracks for beginning and seasoned fundraisers, and a day of special sessions for executive directors and board members.
