Great leaders don't need to be the smartest people in the room; they are comfortable admitting what they don't know, and asking questions. Great leaders understand that in order to go faster, sometimes organizations need to slow down. Leadership means a willingness to take ownership of something greater than oneself - for your team and for your organization. This is especially important in a capital campaign or any major fundraising initiative in your institution. Learn the importance of choosing the right team to position your organization for success!

During a 27-year career in philanthropy and fundraising, Roy Temper has served a wide spectrum of not-for-profit organizations, including healthcare, education, youth and social services, civic groups and the arts. Mr. Temper is an experienced and successful practitioner of all aspects of philanthropy, and has substantial experience in the arena of strategic planning and organizational development. He has provided fundraising counsel to over 1,100 community, regional and national organizations since 1980. Prior to entering the professional fundraising field, Mr. Temper served for 15 years as a senior manager with the YMCA. He served as CEO in six communities across the northeast, and also served as National Office Trainer in philanthropy for boards, staff and volunteers across the country. He was a board member of the Giving Institute (formally the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel - AAFRC). Today, as a member of Ketchum's senior management team, Roy Temper oversees its Healthcare Division and serves as the firm's National Sales Manager.

Deadline to register online or by fax at www.afpdallas.org is Wednesday, February 20.

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

"Love alone is capable of uniting living beings, in such a way as to complete and fulfill them, for it alone takes them and joins them by what is deepest in themselves."

Pierre Teilhard, de Chardin

Who could let February pass without thoughts of love? It is the season for Valentines and candy and flowers. I certainly cannot resist thoughts of love this month!  It is my opportunity to say, "I love you!"  (Easy, now, guys!)  I really do. I love you for the great difference you make in the world.  Your service to humankind is absolutely amazing. I see the improvements you make in the lives of people in so many different ways. When I look at the make-up of AFP I am stunned at the variety of organizations represented in our membership. People who make life better for children, adults, animals, hurting people; people in need of education, medical care, houses, clothing, and just about everything else imaginable. We have people who teach, minister; provide encouragement, direction and assistance of all kinds. Our members bring us together, keep troubles away, and make our lives richer through art, music, theater, and a host of other ways. You make your organizations, and their work, successful by your commitment to excellence in the fundraising that make all of this possible. Our world would truly be a dark place without you and your efforts. I love you for it!

I also love our donors. There are those who think they only give because it benefits them in some way. We know them better. We know that they give because they seek to contribute lasting good to the world. They are generous and engaged in overcoming the problems that touch lives around them. They care. They act. They give. They sometimes sacrifice. They make this great city one of the most wonderful places on earth to live and work. I love them, as I know you do, too.

Thank you for making such a difference in so many ways!  Thank you for the encouragement and support you give to others in AFP-Greater Dallas Chapter.

With love,

Larry Wickham

President, Greater Dallas AFP
