Win a Free Registration for the "Ask The Experts"

Conference!

Our chapter has one free registration to give away for the February 15, 2008 AFP Houston "Ask the Experts" Conference. This annual one-day conference is perfect for the beginner fundraiser, but the caliber of speakers and topics have relevance for even seasoned professionals. Carol Weisman, President of Boardbuilders, will present the keynote entitled "Getting Every Board Member Actively, Joyfully and Productively Involved in Fundraising."

Morning and afternoon breakout sessions will cover a variety of topics from annual giving to ethics, all led by a who's who of area fundraisers. Ned Van Maanen teaches Stewardship Essentials, Jennifer Evans emcees a panel discussion on corporate philanthropy, and Ms. Weisman lectures on 30 Tips to Build a Better Board. Other speakers include: Jody Blazek from Blazek & Vetterling LLP; Anne Murphy and Amy Yeatts from Dini Partners; Diane Guiberteau from the Harry S. and Isabel C. Cameron Foundation and Paul L. Robison from the Strake Foundation, among many others. In addition to classroom time, attendees have the opportunity to visit with fundraising experts at one of many affinity tables during lunch. For more information, visit www.afphouston.org/displaynewsletter.cfm.

If you are interested in attending, please email Robin Piper at Rjohnsonpiper@twu.edu by January 11.  A winner will be drawn on Monday, January 14.

Greater Dallas Chapter Supports Formation of East Texas Chapter

The Greater Dallas Chapter has agreed to sponsor a new AFP Chapter which is forming in East Texas. The Board has approved a resolution to mentor the AFP East Texas Chapter (Forming) and to assist the new chapter with a grant of $500.00 for start-up costs. The East Texas Chapter will submit required documentation to AFP International in anticipation of approval to full chapter status at the 2008 International Conference meeting in March of this year.

This chapter will hold its first meeting on January 22, 2008, with Dr. Doug Lawson of Lawson and Associates Consultants as the inaugural guest speaker. The meeting will be at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler. The formation of new AFP Chapters is rare, and we are pleased to be part of this process.  Please take any opportunity possible to encourage and support this new group.

Every day you make personal and professional decisions based on values that are right and good. You consider yourself to be ethical, but does this make you an ethical leader? Does being an ethical leader require more than having an internal moral compass? If it does, what does it require? Join us to explore these questions about ethics and leadership with Carole Rylander, CFRE, on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 11:30 AM - 1 PM.

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

"If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to sleep with a mosquito." -

Anita Roddick

Dorothy's red shoes never took her on a more exciting, fast-paced journey than we have experienced this past year in the Greater Dallas Chapter, AFP. This entire space could be used to recount the achievements and adventures of 2007. Dr. Mary Brumbach led us to a high place of excellence, and the view over the past year is glorious. You and I are at a great place. We should determine to stop and enjoy the moment. (Pause) Now, wasn't that wonderful!

The next twelve months are before us with opportunity and challenge for all. As we begin 2008 together I want to ask you to do something for the Greater Dallas Chapter. Most of you are already very busy with professional responsibilities, family demands, personal challenges, and things that I probably could never imagine. Still, I ask you to do something for AFP.

Many have been deeply involved in making this a great chapter, but this year we are inviting you to take a more active part.  This chapter needs your energy, your ideas, your skills, your professionalism, and your participation. Please don't sit on the sidelines and think that AFP can succeed without you. Volunteer to serve on a committee, make a positive suggestion, offer constructive criticism, invite a prospective member to attend a luncheon, mentor a new member, or accept some other responsibility.  We need you!  Remember, "The world is run by those who show up."  So is AFP!  Thanks to all who have brought us to this place by your active service and dedication. My thanks, also, to those who will join you in 2008 to continue the progress of this chapter. This ain't Kansas, Dorothy. It's better! It's much better because you make it so.

Welcome to 2008,

Larry Wickham

President, Greater Dallas AFP
