President's Column by Mary Brumbach, Ph.D., CFRE
Interested in celebrating an authentic 17th century Thanksgiving this year?
You can pick a time anywhere between September 21 and November 11.
Don't use a fork, and eat only the food that's immediately in front of you. You do have a spoon and knife but no plates to pass.
The best food will be accessible only by the most important people at the feast. And, by the way, you'll need to call it a Harvest Festival and plan on three days of games, dancing, and singing with the Wampanoag Indians.
Your menu? Lobster, seal, swan, crane, venison, eagles, stewed pumpkin, peas, beans, onions, plums, grapes, walnuts, dried currents, and maybe a wild turkey.
And those ubiquitous silver buckles and black and white outfits? The buckles don't show up until much later in the century and your pilgrim forefathers were a colorful lot wearing red, earthy green, brown, blue, violet, and gray.
Some things will be familiar: celebration, bountiful tables, and giving thanks. It's always seemed very appropriate to me that our National Philanthropy Day event comes in the season of giving and thanksgiving.
What better way to begin this time of year than recognizing those who invest so much in the life and lives of our community through our organizations? Thanksgiving, gratitude, and grace all arise from the same root words, the same human need to acknowledge what is good and generous and filled with possibilities.
G.K. Chesterton perhaps captures it best: "You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink."
With gratitude for your work in this world,
Mary
