Don't Beat Yourself Up!
Learn to program
yourself to success and happiness.
"That was pretty stupid!" "I can't do anything right!" "I'm such a klutz!"
When you mumble these phrases under your breath, you may think you're just
blowing off steam. You may think that if you were confronted with how you really
felt about yourself, you would be much more positive than that! You might have
had ambivalent feelings about your self-esteem at times as a teenager, but now
you are a very self-confident adult.
Here's the problem. Off-hand, spoken or unspoken remarks
such as these may reflect impressions you formed about yourself and your
abilities long ago. You may not consciously think about yourself this way now,
but at another time in your life, during a particular emotionally charged
experience, you may have had this belief. Your subconscious doesn't know
the difference here. All it knows is
feelings. And, the feelings created with these "blowing off
steam" phrases are, in fact, negative.
Each time you pass judgment on yourself, you enter personal
programming into your brain. And, you'll respond to this non-conscious
personal programming whether you're aware of it or not. So, since you will
respond, it's to your advantage to make sure that the things you say to
yourself are positive and motivating instead of negative and
degrading.
That's the good news. You can control this programming! Your
inner commentary can help you reach goals, enjoy satisfaction in everything you
do, and generally live life to the fullest!
So, the next time you are frustrated with yourself, try saying something
different than "I'm so stupid! Why did I do that?" Say, "I'm learning!"
instead!
Be conscious. Live an intentional life!
