The Wine Connection

Superb Bordeaux Ex-Chateau

September 10th 2008

Offers out of Bordeaux have been few and far between, as prices were too high mostly because of currency. Today, we were able to grab a few cases of rare wines directly from the cellars of the Moueix family, owners of Chateau Petrus among others.

Arriving in November.

  • Margaux 1985 Double Magnums $7,995. per case (1 case available - OWC)

Truly one of the greatest, most seamless Margaux ever produced, the 1985 is our favorite vintage for current drinking and beyond. We may be in the minority but we prefer it to the 1982 and 1983 and, in double magnums...watch out!
  • Troplong Mondot 2000 Magnums $2,299. per case (2 cases available - OWC)

Troplong Mondot 2000 Double Magnums $2,499. per case (1 case available - OWC)

Considering how much the 2005 has gone up, the 2000 is quite a bargain and not far behind in quality. Very rare in these sizes.

"Combining remarkable elegance allied to considerable power and depth, this is the finest wine from Troplong Mondot since the staggeringly great 1990. Its saturated purple color is followed by aromas of ink, creme de cassis, graphite, and toasty oak. Full-bodied and powerful, with excellent balance, this is a wine of extraordinary richness and massiveness yet surreal freshness as well as vibrancy. The finish lasts for over 45 seconds and nearly conceals some hefty tannins. With fabulous definition, richness, and intensity, this is a compelling 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2026." 95 points Robert Parker

  • Pavie Macquin 2000 Magnums $1,799. per case (4 cases available - OWC)

Pavie Macquin 2000 Double Magnums $1,849. per case (1 case available - OWC)

As Troplong 2005, Pavie Macquin's price has shot up considerably and the 2000 is a gorgeous wine for a couple of thosand dollars less.

" A wine of great density, concentration, and intensity, the opaque blue/purple 2000 Pavie Macquin needs considerable aeration, but with decanting the prodigious bouquet of graphite, camphor, blackberry, blueberry, mineral, coffee, and smoky oak finally makes an appearance. Persuasive, expansive, full-bodied, and muscular, this enormously endowed, rich wine looks set for a long life, at least three decades. A terrific effort that rivals the compelling 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025." 95 points Robert Parker
