John Giolas The Black & White Project

Newsletter of the BWPC
Greetings!
Several new BWPC members and a few long time contributors have turned out for the June 2007 exhibit. The current exhibit features a series of photographs by John Giolas and the Open Gallery Submissions where anything goes.

This series, which I have dubbed "the lunchtime series", was shot within a five-mile radius of my office. For the past several months, I have spent my lunch hour either scouting for abandoned homes and barns, or shooting them.  The area near my office is filled with turn-of-the-century homes and farms that have been left to decay. I am fascinated with relentlessness of nature, how these old structures, left unattended, are reabsorbed into the earth from which they originated.

Doors and windows have always captivated me.  These structural openings are a metaphor for the transition the buildings themselves are in.  In the lunchtime series, the buildings were built in an era before tract homes and McMansions; before strip malls and mass-production; before the world was such cynical place. They were built from the natural materials available in the area.  Just as these buildings came from the earth, they are now devolving back into her.
